  13. Why are books challenged or banned? There are five common reasons why books are banned (there are examples in parenthesis, please click on them.) 1. Religion is discussed or “challenged” (Harry Potter) 2. The text contains language thought to be inappropriate (The Bridge to Terabithia) 3. Relationships are too intense (And Tango Makes Three) 4. Challenge of authority (Harriett the Spy) 5. Violence (Scary Story Series)

  14. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling This series was banned for religious purposes. The Critically acclaimed Harry Potter Series tells the story of a young wizard, on his quest to receive a “magical education”. He is a living legend in the wizarding world and he shows his readers why. This seven part story incorporates friends, danger, mystery and hope. *Harry Potter series was banned for Occult/Satanism and anti-family themes. (ala.org)

  15. The Bridge to Terabithia by: Katherine Paterson This book was banned for the use of inappropriate language. Jess trained all summer to be the fastest runner. He was excited about the first day of school, until Leslie moved in. Through the ups and downs, Leslie and Jess build a secret land and a friendship that was suppose to last a lifetime. *The Bridge to Terabithia was banned because of "anti-religion, language, and discussion of death." (Ala.org)

  16. And Tango Makes ThreeBy Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell This children’s picture book, which was banned because of the “intense” relationship it discussed. This is the story of two male penguins named Silo and Roy. They attempt to hatch an egg-shaped rock and find no success in their efforts, the zoo keepers decide to place a fertilized penguin egg in their cage and end up with little baby Tango, in an amusing tale based on a true story from the Central Park Zoo. *Silo and Roy’s relationship, because they are both male penguins, is challenged.

  17. Harriett the Spyby Louise Fitzhugh. This novel was banned for the characters challenge of authority. Harriet M. Welsch is a spy. She writes down everything she observes and the information she gains about everyone. On one awful day, Harriett loses her notebook, and it falls into the wrong hands. *Considered "dangerous" because it "teaches children to lie, spy, back-talk and curse.“ (www.radix.net)

  18. Scary Stories Series by Alvin Schwartz This series was banned for it’s inclusion of violence in the text. This collection includes seven scary stories, which are easy to read. Children will be introduced to characters they will remember for a lifetime. * “Scary Stories” series by Alvin Schwartz for occult/Satanism, unsuited to age group, violence, and insensitivity; (Ala.org)

  19. Book Banning Effects you! Why? You may ask? Well, because it limits your first amendment rights. The first amendment of the constitution states that; “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

  20. First Amendment Rights -Book banning is taking your freedom to read what you want, when you want it away. -It also takes away the authors (of the banned book) right to express themselves The famous author Judy Blume wrote this quote about book banning: “It’s not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers.”

  21. Who has the power to challenged or ban a book? Anyone, no matter how big or small, old or young can challenge a book! We are all given the freedom of speech in the first amendment. Even the tiny Who’s of Whoville, (who live on a speck on the flower that Horton is holding) could challenge a book!

  22. Who has the power to challenged or ban a book? While it takes a lot to get a book banned. Schools (School boards), libraries, book stores, organizations, and even the government have the authority to have a book taken off the shelves and banned.
