Yearly Overview Fall Semester: • To Kill A Mockingbird (Students who have not finished reading the novel need to do so by Thursday, September 27.) • A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines. Need a clean copy by October 8. • Short Stories Spring Semester: • Romeo and Juliet. I will provide the copies students will need. • Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Need a clean copy. • Literature Circles. Titles will be announced with plenty of notice to purchase the novel.
Writing focus • Throughout the year we will practice and assess students’ ability to write in various modes. Those include: • Expository essay writing • Literary essay writing • Analytical writing (including writing thesis statements that are supported by concrete details and effective commentary) • Reflective writing • Students will write on a daily basis, primarily in their RAW (Reading and Writing) books. Graded at the end of each six-weeks.

PRE-ap : gleNGLISH In Pre-AP: • covers increased depth of the same skills covered in grade level • text used to cover skills are more challenging • more independent assignments/reading • faster pace through works of literature and related assignments • serves as a companion course with sophomore Pre-AP, as prerequisites for junior and senior Advanced Placement courses which are college level courses
