  1. Upcoming AQPG Activities NOAA GOES-R AQPG 3rd Annual Advisory Group Workshop March 14, 2013

  2. Near Real-Time 2013 GOES-R ABI Demonstration • The AQPG plans to have another near real-time ABI testbed demonstration: • 2-3 week intensive period during DISCOVER-AQ in Houston (Sept 2013) • Daily streaming of simulated ABI aerosol products • Products updated every hour during the day • Accessible via special section of IDEA website • Domain: CONUS (using WRF-CMAQ model*) • Proxy ABI products: • AOD (hourly and composites) • AOD-derived estimates of surface PM2.5 concentration • Simulated natural color (RGB) • Aerosol type * Funded by GOES-R Program at ARL

  3. Feedback on 2013 NRT Demonstration Products • We will be looking for volunteers to review the NRT simulated ABI aerosol products and give us feedback on necessary improvements to products. • Things to keep in mind: • The simulated ABI products will be generated from WRF-CMAQ model output, which has limited real-time emissions and optical properties • The AQPG is not focusing on data validation or shortcomings in the WRF-CMAQ • Users should focus on evaluating the processof receiving streaming images of dynamic, high accuracy, high temporal resolution (once per hour) aerosol imagery • Users should try to anticipate the expected usefulness of ABI aerosol products based on the proxy images– tell us what you like and what we still need to work on

  4. Additional AQPG GOES-R 2013 Activities • Preparing 2nd journal article focusing on method for generating simulated ABI aerosol products • Initial article on AQPG concept published in EM Magazine, November 2012 • 2nd article will be more technical • Presentation on AQPG at National Air Quality Conference in May/June • Evaluating AWIPS-II as a delivery system for ABI aerosol products to NWS WFO’s and the air quality community

  5. Expansion of AQPG • Name change to NOAA Satellite AQPG – incorporating other satellite sensors (e.g., VIIRS) • Daily VIIRS NRT AOD and RGB imagery now on IDEA: http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/smcd/spb/aq/index_viirs.php • We will have demo/training on VIIRS at upcoming meetings (e.g., AMS, AGU, NAQC) • 4th annual AQPG workshop will be a 2-day VIIRS Science and Application workshop: • Held at UMBC for Advisory Group members • Day 1: scientific presentations on VIIRS data • Day 2: hands-on activities/analysis • Travel funding provided by NOAA
