  1. Freshwater Fish Internal Organs Mr. Berry

  2. Internal Anatomy http://myfwc.com/Fishing/Fishes/anatomy.html#internal

  3. You will be responsible for: • Muscle • Kidney • Pyloric Caeca • Spine • Spinal Cord • Swim Bladder • Stomach • Intestines • Heart • Liver • Vent

  4. For the Test • Correctly label all internal parts • Be able to explain the function of each part http://myfwc.com/Fishing/Fishes/panfish.html

  5. Muscle • Provides movement • This portion is usually consumed as the fillet

  6. Kidney • Filters waste materials from the blood • Regulates water and salt concentrations in the body

  7. Pyloric Caeca • Secretes enzymes that help digest food • Is Identified by it’s finger-like projections next to the stomach

  8. Spinal Cord • Connects brain to rest of body • Relays information from the brain to the rest of the body

  9. Spine • Primary backbone of the fish • Made up of vertebrae that protect the spinal cord

  10. Swim Bladder • An air filled organ • Allows fish to suspend neutrally in the water • Conserves energy instead of constant swimming

  11. Liver • Very Important Organ • Secretes enzymes to aid in digestion • Stores fats and carbohydrates • Moderates the blood chemistry (nitrogen excretion)

  12. Review: • Be able to label all internal body parts and organs listed. • Know function or key role played by each body part as listed in this lecture. • Know those and you will do great!

  13. Vent • Site of waste elimination from the body

  14. Heart • Circulates blood throughout the body • Oxygen and digested nutrients are delivered to cells throughout the body by the circulated blood

  15. Stomach and Intestines • Digest food • Absorbs nutrients • Carnivorous fish have shorter intestines than herbivores because plants are harder to digest. • The longer intestine allows for more time and area to absorb nutrients
