  3. STEPS FOR WRITING AN ANALYSIS • 1st: Topic sentence: describe what is happening in the text (contextual information) • 2nd: Explain your main points of development (the significance of the passage) • 3rd: Develop each point in detail, using specific words and phrases from the passage • 4th: A concluding sentence

  4. SAMPLE PASSAGE ANALYSIS • “On and on he went. Mariam sat watching the girl out of the corner of her eye as Rasheed’s demands and judgements rained down on them like the rockets on Kabul” (Hosseini 224).

  5. QUOTATION 1 • “Soon, Rasheed returns with a handful of pebbles and forces Mariam’s mouth open and stuffs them in. He then orders her to chew the pebbles. In her fear, she does as he asks, breaking the molars in the back of her mouth. He tells her, “Now you know what your rice tastes like. Now you know what you’ve given me in this marriage. Bad food, and nothing else.”

  6. QUOTATION 2 • “Society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated, Laila. No chance.”
