OnLine Strategy Subcommittee Santa Fe Senate Executive Committee March 21, 2012
Charge: To recommend a strategy for online education at santa Fe College
Why? • address student, faculty, and public perceptions about the quality of online courses • ensure the integrity of a Santa Fe education
Why did we ask you to help us? • support for gathering information • support for committee’s recommendation • informed • faculty-driven • model for other colleges • support for implementation
What it means to you (the instructor & SF): • Preserving and enhancing your reputation as an educator • Preserving and enhancing the reputation of Santa Fe • Securing Santa Fe’s future in an increasingly competitive environment • Pre-empting SACS • League for Innovation leadership
How we’ll do it: Step 1: a comprehensive survey of faculty, students and administrators to understand perceptions, opinions, requirements, needs, and misconceptions. Step 2: a statement of the goals and objectives of the stakeholders. Step 3: a strategy for goal convergence and success of online education at Santa Fe.
Possible issues: • Student/public misconception that online classes are “easier” and therefore less valuable. • Faculty/administration perception that online instructors are less committed. • Greater opportunity/tendency for cheating in online classes. • Need to provide more online classes or face decreased enrollment (short term.) • Need to differentiate SF’s online offering or lose market share to other better known, better promoted, cheaper, easier institutions (long term.)
Possible solutions: • Ensure outcomes, workloads, and standards are equivalent – and tell people. • Qualify instructors in online education. • Address and publicize integrity controls. • Support the development of more online courses based on high standards of content, delivery, and outcomes. • Develop a reputation for integrity and quality so that local and distance learning students prefer us.
What does the committee need now? • Administration support • Departmental buy-in • Faculty cooperation • Student recognition
