FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE FOR CORRECTIONS FOP NATIONAL HISTORY The Fraternal Order of Police was founded in 1915 by two Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania police officers, Martin Toole and Delbert Nagle. They and 21 other members of the Pittsburgh Police rank and file met on May 14, 1915, establishing the Fraternal Order of Police and its first local, Fort Pitt Lodge #1. Soon after, other State Lodges were established and then the Grand Lodge was formed to encompass the United States. From the original 23 members the membership now totals over 360,000 and there are over 2200 local Lodges including one in Dublin & Blarney, Ireland and one in Ontario, Canada. WWW.AZFOP44.NET
FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE FOR CORRECTIONS FOP LOCAL HISTORY In 1934, Tucson Police Officer Frank Eyman was one of several officers who captured John Dillinger in downtown Tucson. Eyman, who later became the Warden of the Arizona State Prison in Florence (1955-1972) transported Dillinger to Chicago. While there, he had the opportunity to visit the FOP Lodge and he was so impressed that he returned to Tucson and established the first FOP Lodge in Arizona. Today Arizona has over 37 active Law Enforcement Lodges throughout the State. WWW.AZFOP44.NET
FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE FOR CORRECTIONS FOP44 HISTORY In 1980, the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 44 for Corrections was organized for the mutual aid and protection of Arizona Department of Corrections Officers. And since then, FOP44 has become one of the largest Lodges in the Fraternal Order of Police. Started as a not-for-profit, the founders knew the value of having a real voice in the State Legislature for Correctional Officers and the desired true due process from the Department they worked for. FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE FOR CORRECTIONS FOP CORRECTIONS The Fraternal Order of Police currently has two Correctional Lodges. Lodge 62 covers Tucson and Lodge 44 covers all the rest of Arizona. Both Lodges provide the membership with a voice in everything from the leadership and the agenda, to how the member’s money is spent through the use of parliamentarian procedures and member votes; virtually all expenditures and decisions are based on majority votes. FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE FOR CORRECTIONS FOP LABOR COUNCIL FOP Lodge 44 and Lodge 62 represent the interests of ADC Correctional and Parole Officers statewide. Together they both formed the FOP ADC Labor Council in preparation for true collective bargaining with the State. This Labor Council is recognized by the Arizona Department of Corrections and meets with the Director to give you a “voice at the table” and present changes to policy and ensures that a non-adversarial, direct line of communications, is open between line staff and the Director’s Office. The Fraternal Order of Police is the only Law Enforcement employee organization on this Board.
