  2. Duct Tape Information Adhesive tape was invented in the 1920's by Richard Drew of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Co. Duct tape was first created and manufactured in 1942 approximate date by the Johnson and Johnson. predecessor was medical tape.

  3. Duct Tape Information #2 • The original use was to keep moisture out of the ammunition cases. Because it was waterproof, people referred to the tape as "Duck Tape." Also, the tape was made using cotton duck - similar to what was used in their cloth medical tapes. Military personnel quickly discovered that the tape was very versatile and used it to fix their guns, jeeps, aircraft, etc. After the war, the tape was used in the booming housing industry to connect heating and air conditioning.

  5. Duct Tape Facts • Composition • Duct tape is made up of three layers. The top layer is very durable plastic called polyethelyne, the middle layer is a fabric-based mesh and the bottom layer is made from a rubber-based adhesive. • Strength • Duct tape is most effective when it sticks to itself and least effective on wet surfaces. When duct tape is taped to itself, it can pull up to 2,000 lbs. • Medical Uses • Duct tape has many medical uses, including bandaging and eliminating warts. Duct tape can also serve as an insulator and you can tape it on to skin to keep warm. For this reason, many skiers stick the tape onto their face to prevent frostbite and protect against cold wind.

  6. Duct Tape • Duct tape belongs in the production category, mostly because it was invented to fix and construct things for the army. • Duct Tape has no real negative effect a people or the enviroment.

  7. Richard Gurley Drew When Drew joined 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1924, it was a modest manufacturer of sandpaper. While testing their new Wet or dry sandpaper at auto shops, Drew was intrigued to learn that the two-tone auto paintjobs so popular in the Roaring Twenties were difficult to manage at the border between the two colors. In response, after two years of work in 3M's labs, Drew invented the first masking tape (1923), a two-inch-wide tan paper strip backed with a light, pressure sensitive adhesive.

  8. Innovations • Cellulose Tape>Masking Tape> • Water Proof Tape>Duct Tape • > • Cellulose Tape >>>>>>>>> Masking tape>>>>>>>>Waterproof Tape • VVV • <<< • Duct Tape

  9. History of Duct Tape • Duct tape was also used by the Apollo 13 astronauts in their near fatal moon mission. The astronauts used the tape to create air scrubbers for their weakened oxygen supply, which kept the men alive long enough to engineer a rescue.

  10. Composition • Cotton mesh forms the base of duct tape. The cotton backing gives strength and lets the tape to be torn in both directions . Tighter weaves and higher thread count , give greater strength, and allow for a cleaner tear. Accordingly, tape made with a better quality mesh is more expensive. The cotton fabric is called a "web".

  11. Composition #2 • Coating • Duct tape's polyethylene coating is what makes it waterproof. Because of its flexibility, it helps the duct tape stick to irregular surfaces. • Adhesive • Duct tape adhesive is made from rubber and provides a stronger attachment than other types of tape.
