  2. Biography • Born in Edinburgh, 15 August 1771 • Attended Edinburgh High School • Law degree at Edinburgh University • At 25 he began writing • In 1797 he married Charlotte Carpenter, had four children • 1825 begun financial difficulties • Died in Melrose 21 September 1832

Literary work • Mostrenowned as the founder of the genre of the historical novel • Spellbinding characters and stories • Scott’s work reflects the influence of the 18th century enlightenment • Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works • The first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically

  4. Literary work • Conflicts between opposing cultures • “Ivanhoe” (1819) is about war between Normans and Saxons • “The Talisman” (1825) is about conflict between Christians and Muslims • Clashes between the new English culture and the old Scottish

  5. IVANHOE • Anovel by Sir Walter Scott • Writtenin 1819 and set in 12th century England • An example of historical fiction • Increasedpopular interest in the Middle Ages

  6. IVANHOE • A story of one of the remaining Saxon noble families • It follows the Saxon protagonist, Wilfred of Ivanhoe • The story is set in 1194, after the end of the Third Crusade • King Richard I had become a prisoner

  7. IVANHOE • Ivanhoe supports King Richard • Falls in love with the ward of his father Cedric • His father disinherits Ivanhoe • Ivanhoe accompanies King Richard I to his Crusades

  8. IVANHOE • At the end of the novel, Ivanhoe marries Lady Rowena • Is in King Richard’s service until the king’s death. • The general political events described in the novel are relatively accurate
