  4. Hollis F. Price Library • The Hollis F. Price Library opened in 1963. • The library is named after the first African-American president of the college, Dr. Hollis Freeman Price. • The library has a collection of over 85,000 volumes. • The library houses a mosaic designed specifically for the library by artist, Ben Shahn.   11. Library Cards • All students must have a validated LeMoyne-Owen student I.D. to check out books. • You must complete a library card application before being allowed to check out books. Library cards are available in the library at the circulation/reference desk. • New students are welcome to come by the library to complete an application for a library card. PROPER I.D. required. Borrowing Policies • Students, faculty, and staff of LeMoyne-Owen College and affiliated institutions with a current college or university identification card may borrow resources. • Your LeMoyne-Owen College identification card is required to check out materials. • Starting Fall 2008, your validated identification card is all you will need to check out books. • LOC alumni, visiting scholars, and local residents may borrow library materials. These individuals must visit the circulation desk between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. CLJ2007

  14. Penalties • All library materials must be returned on DATE DUE. Losses should be reported immediately. • A late fee and/or replacement fee will be imposed. • Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out to them. Mutilated, lost and/or damaged resources and delinquencies must be paid for by the borrower. For student borrowers, transcripts and grades will not be issued until all delinquencies are cleared.   15. Fines • Circulating books-.25 • Overnight Reserves-.50/1st hour, .25 for each succeeding hour-$5.00 maximum • Video/Equipment/Laptop-$1.00 per day CLJ2007

  17. Collection Arrangement • The Hollis F. Price Library follows the Library of Congress classification system. • The Library of Congress classification system is a combination of letters and numbers which are “call numbers.” • Letters identify the subject of work. • Example, books with call numbers beginning with the letter J relate to Political Science. • To view a library of congress subject guide, access the link below: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/ CLJ2007

  18. Special Location Symbols Some library materials have special codes so that users can easily identify these materials.   19. Online Catalog Access • Access www.loc.edu. • Locate the link labeled, “library.” • Click on “online catalog.” CLJ2007

  20. What is the library catalog? The online library catalog is an electronic database that contains a description of all materials owned by the library. The online library catalog evolved from the paper card catalog. CLJ2007

Use the Library Catalog • Access the library catalog at www.loc.edu • You can search for books using the following options: subject, title, keyword, and author. • Use subject or keyword searching for broad searches. • Print or write down the citation (author, title, etc) and location information (call number) • Remember, NetLibrary (e-books) and Interlibrary loan are also options for obtaining books.   23. NetLibrary • Access www.loc.edu • Locate the link, “library.” • Click on “electronic resources.” • Enter your LeMoyne-Owen College computer username and password in the two boxes. • Once you logon, NetLibrary is located on the last row of electronic resources. CLJ2007

Interlibrary Loan HFPL library cooperates with other US libraries in an interlibrary loan code that allows students and faculty members working on special projects to request books or copies of periodical articles. Interlibrary loan users must consult with a librarian regarding their requests. Borrowers should be prepared to pay for postage and photocopying of materials on loan. Interlibrary forms and materials are available at the circulation desk. CLJ2007

  25. Consortium • Library users have access to resources not available in the Hollis F. Price Library (HFPL) through an agreement with the University of Memphis, Southwest Tennessee Community College, and Rust College. • HFPL is also a participant in the Direct Access Program of Academic Institutions which includes Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University, Memphis Theological Seminary, Memphis College of Art, and Crichton College. Periodicals • Access electronic resources at www.loc.edu • Browse the current periodical section on the second floor of the library. • The bound periodicals may also prove useful in your research. • Remember periodicals refer to either journals or popular magazines. • Journals focus on academic research and are written by experts in the field. • Popular magazines are written in a language everyone can understand with articles written by staff writers. Current Periodicals • Current Periodicals are located on the second floor of the library. • The current periodicals do not circulate. • All current periodicals are organized for easy student access. • The library subscribes to numerous publications related each LeMoyne-Owen College academic discipline. • A detailed list of all current periodicals is kept at the circulation desk.   30. Bound Periodicals • Bound Periodicals are older issues of periodicals saved as bound copies. • The Bound Periodicals are located on the second floor of the library. • Bound Periodicals do not circulate. CLJ2007

  31. Web-Based Periodicals • Access www.loc.edu • Locate the “library” link. • Click on “electronic resources.” • Web-Based periodicals gives you access to thousands of periodicals via various specialized databases! CLJ2007
