History • Research and development - 1970 by Eli Lilly and Company • First article published in 1974 • 1975, given official name fluoxetine, with Prozac as the trade name • February 1977, fluoxetine was presented to FDA • Claimed to be the first “selective serotonin uptake inhibitor” • Approved for use by FDA in December 1987 • Patent expired in 2001

Effects • Physiological • Wide range, based on which condition it treats • Psychological • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) • Works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, which helps establish mental balance • Serotonin is prevented from being absorbed into a recipient nerve cell after a chemical synapse occurs • Stays in synaptic cleft longer than normal, and repeatedly stimulates receptors of recipient cell • No known schedule rating

  5. Possible Side Effects • Nervousness • Nausea • Drowsiness • Weakness • Uncontrollable shaking • Appetite loss • Weight loss • Changes in sex drive or ability
