History of Prairie View A&M University • Founded in 1876 as the Alta Vista College of Texas for Colored Youth • Second oldest University in Texas (by three hours)! • Became the second member of the TAMUS • Chartered by the State of Texas as an industrial college • L.W. Minor appointed Principal
History of Prairie View A&M University • On March 11, 1878 eight young African American men, the first of their race to enroll in a state-supported college in Texas • Several name changes until 1947—Prairie View A&M University • 1983—PVAMU became the third university designated as “University of the First Class”
History of the College of Education • In 1879, PVAMU’s original mission was eclipsed with the need to produce Colored teachers for Texas • In 1885, Nettie V. Fairchild and Kate J. Whitaker —first two students to receive certificates in education • The PV Training School was established in 1918 to help meet the need for training teachers
History of the College of Education • The training school was enlarged in 1921 and in 1925 • In 1946, PV became a “University to “offer, as the need arose, all courses offered at the University of Texas.” • PVAMU has been a member of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education since its inception in 1958
History of the College of Education • In 2007, the college was named after 1936 alumnus, Whitlowe R. Green, who bestowed a gift of $2.1 million—the largest single gift to the University and the building was named after legislator, Wilhelmina R. Delco • There have been four Deans: • Dr. W.W. Clem--1976 • Dr. Harry G. Henricks--1977 • Dr. M. Paul Mehta--1986 • Dr. Lucian Yates, III—2008
