WHAT IS AN ACCIDENT? • An accident is an unplanned event that results in injury or damage: • It could be someone with a broken arm, or a vehicle that has hit a garage door causing material damage • A near miss is a similar event where no one is injured or no damage occurs: • A brick falls off some scaffolding and hits the ground next to you BSC Level 1 Award in Health and Safety at Work Issue 1 – October 2010

WHY DO ACCIDENTS HAPPEN? • Accidents are caused by a number of things including human and mechanical errors • Common causes can include: • People not concentrating on what they are doing • People taking unnecessary risks • Using faulty or damaged equipment • Poor systems of work • Lack of training and supervision BSC Level 1 Award in Health and Safety at Work Issue 1 – October 2010

  6. WHY DO WE NEED TO REPORT ACCIDENTS? • It is important that all accidents (however minor) and near misses are reported • This can help to: • Find out what the cause was • Prevent similar accidents happening again BSC Level 1 Award in Health and Safety at Work Issue 1 – October 2010

  7. TOO YOUNG TO DIE • A young person is seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes. In the last ten years, 66 under-19s have been killed at work. • A 16-year-old was killed on a construction site when he was struck by a structure weighing nearly two tonnes. He had only left school a few weeks before the incident. • A 17-year-old was crushed to death inside an industrial recycling machine. It is thought the clothing may have been caught in the machine’s conveyer belt. BSC Level 1 Award in Health and Safety at Work Issue 1 – October 2010
