  5. Brief History • Armenia declares independence and forms a republic in 1918 after centuries of struggles with the Persians • In 1920, under the USSR Armenia becomes Soviet Armenia • With the fall of the USSR in 1991, Armenia becomes a Republic again

  6. Brief History….. • The Armenian Genocide -Massive killing of Armenians • Reason: During WWI, the Turks (who sided with Germany) thought that the Armenians betrayed them by helping Russia • On April 24, 1915, the Turkish government arrested several Armenians and the massacre began.
