  2. Author’s Purpose His or her main reason for writing.

  3. The author’s purpose influences what the author says and how he or she says it. • The reader must use text clues and background knowledge to determine the author’s reasons for writing.

  4. Author’s Purpose To persuade To entertain To inform To reflect on an experience Clues Strong language, favors one side of an issue. Silly, humorous, suspenseful, exciting details. Facts and details Descriptions, comments by the writer.

  5. Academic Vocabulary: words for discussing author’s purpose Word -previous (adj.) -recall (v.) -background (n.) Definition -Occurring before in time or order. -to call back or remember -a person’s experience or knowledge Example Sentence -The author’s previous works were more persuasive. -Can you recall the story details? The author’s background helped establish the author’s purpose.

  7. Question #1 • Why might it be important to understand the author’s purpose? • It helps readers make judgments about the author’s reliability and objectivity. • Allows the reader to get a sense of what type of reading they are doing. Their purpose for reading the author’s work.

  9. Question #3 • What does the author’s purpose influence? • The type and amount of information the author provides in a work.

  10. Question #4 • Can an author write with more than one purpose in mind? YES!!! For example, they can entertain as well as share lessons about life.
