ETA Systems A guide to Real Power Protection
Why Buy Power Protection? • Because AC Power is the most unpredictable part of you system design • Without AC, you system won’t work • Unregulated AC can subject your system to voltage bursts (spikes and surges) • These can damage your system or cause it to operate incorrectly • Incoming AC voltage can vary. • This causes your electronics to be starved from the voltage they need to operate correctly
Why Buy Power Distribution? Continued • AC noise will cause irritating buzz in your system • EMI (Electro-Mechanical Interference) is caused when another device on the same circuit introduces noise. • Refrigerators, Air conditioners, etc. • The noise could even be coming from the operation of your neighbors electronics. • RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) • Initial Powering up of our equipment can cause a “on rush” of power can cause a breaker or fuse to trip or damage your electronics.
How Do Problems Enter a System? Normal Mode Phase (hot) to Neutral Should be <10 volts Common Mode Neutral to Ground Should be < ½ volt
What Devices Are Used To Solve Power Problems. Which Device Is The Appropriate One To Use?
AC – The Surge Diverter/Filter Example of surge diverter/noise filter function. Diverters and filters convert normal mode to common mode. GEAR
Remember Normal Mode Phase (hot) to Neutral Should be <10 volts Common Mode Neutral to Ground Should be < ½ volt
B – Isolation Transformer H N/G H N G Isolation transformers eliminated common mode voltage. Transformers provide a code legal way of bonding neutral to ground.
Balanced Power Transformer H N G H G N 60 volts 60 volts Balanced power transformers have their ground separated from phase and neutral by 60 volts. Neutral and ground cannot be bonded and common mode voltage is not eliminated. Balanced power transformers are primarily designed to eliminate 60 Hz. hum. They are not intended for microprocessor based electronics.
ABC – ETA Power Conditioner H N/G H N G When used with a true isolation transformer with a neutral to ground bond, surge diverters and noise filters can do their job without creating a common mode disturbance. The number of surge diversion and filter elements is also greatly reduced.
So What Does This Mean to Digital Equipment? • Digital Equipment is very sensitive • Digital communication is a sequence of 1’s and 0’s • The slightest variance could cause a Errors, causing No Fault Found service calls • Digital Takes a Reference Point from Ground • If Noise is present on Ground, the reference is corrupted and errors result.
Remember Normal Mode Phase (hot) to Neutral Should be <10 volts Common Mode Neutral to Ground Should be < ½ volt
An Example of Power Line Noise Normal Mode Noise - ~ 1.5 volts Common Mode Noise - ~ 2 volts
