Furs becoming the rage in Europe • Champlain quickly obtained a monopoly in Canada • Sent out coureurs de bois – young explorers • Company doing well but France not interested in permanently settling region
Company of a Hundred Associates • Took over Champlain’s original company • Champlain returned to the St. Lawrence and set up more posts along the river in the companies name • Within it’s charter, the company was required to bring more people to the colony and set up seigneuries • Monopoly lasted until 1660
Role of the Coureurs de bois • Sent to keep close trading partners with natives • Travelled deep into the continent in search of furs and the northwest passage • Independent traders of the fur trade • Even though fur trade to be run by monopolies • Fur brigades – groups of people who traded furs for a living

France Reinforces the Colony • France trying to support new mercantile empire • Mercantilism – certain amount of wealth in the world and it is in the nations best interest to accumulate as much as possible • Sent 1100 professional soldiers to build colony • Fought against English allies – Iroquois • Opened up the west • 1663 – colony became a Royal Colony of France • A governor was appointed as well as an intendant – chief administrator – govern local people • Jean Talon – first intendant • Promoted New France and brought more women to colony from France – men outnumbered women 6-1 • Called filles du roi – king’s daughters
