  2. Learning to Pray Like Jesus

  3. When Jesus Prayed... It was intensely personal Psalm 63:1 O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

  4. When Jesus Prayed... It was His highest priority John 8:28 Then Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me.”

  5. When Jesus Prayed... It was His highest priority • He began His ministry in prayer • He sustained His ministry through prayer • He concluded His ministry with prayer Mark 1:35 Then Jesus got up early in the morning when it was still very dark, departed, and went out to a deserted place, and there he spent time in prayer.

  6. When Jesus Prayed... It was His highest priority “I can be active and pray; I can work and pray; but I cannot be busy and pray. I cannot be inwardly rushed, distracted, or dispersed…. Usually, for [prayer] to happen there must be a deliberate withdrawal from the noise of the day, a disciplined detachment from the insatiable self.” Eugene Petersen, The Contemplative Pastor

  7. When Jesus Prayed... He didn’t give up

  8. Why don’t we pray like Jesus? • We don’t understand what prayer is • We have been disappointed in prayer • We have not been taught to pray • We don’t realize how much we need it

  9. Learning to Pray • Find a quiet place • Give God time • Pray specifically and boldly
