Introduction • What is a CMS? • Stands for Content Management System • Is web-based • Allows non-technical authors to update web sites • Allows technical administrators to better manage web sites • Like Power Point Presentations, they have an Author Side (editing mode) and a User Side (presentation mode)

  4. Getting Started • Logging In • During Training: • Go to http://mars.matrix.uh.edu:8888 • cmstrain01, cmstrain02, cmstrain03, etc. • Afterwards • Go to http://cms.uh.edu • Use your cougarnet credentials • Getting oriented with the CMS home • Folders & files just like your PC • Parent-child relationships

  5. Editing a page • Using the WYSIWYG editor • Using --formats-- • internal/external links • email links • Inserting images • Paste from MS Word – don’t • Title, System Name, File Display Name, and Folder Display Name (yes, it’s confusing – we’re working on it)

  6. Common Asset Types • Folder with Standard Content Page (your typical web page) • News and Events Article • File (MSWord docs, powerpointpresentations, pdfs, images, etc) • Folder • Physical Redirect

Editing Differences • Standard Content Page • Banners • Related Links • Wide vs Standard layout • News Article (News and Events Article) • Teaser • Story type • Multiple contact infos • Folder • Display in menu • Title -> navigation and breadcrumbs • Files • Just choose the file, ignore the rest

  8. Creating a page • How do you do it: • The New menu • Content wizards • Copying an existing file • Automatic Navigation • Paths, filenames, and good URLs
