  1. POETRY Different Types of Rhyme

  2. Exact rhyme occurs when words have identical final sounds. EXAMPLE: The crowd was tense The team was on defense The pass was good Everyone stood Oh boy, what suspense. EXACT RHYME

  3. NEAR RHYME • Near rhyme occurs between words with similar (not identical) sounds. • There are 3 types of near rhyme: • Alliteration • Assonance • Consonance

  4. The repetition of similar consonant sounds, often at the beginning of words. EXAMPLE: Four fat frogs fishing for frightened fish. Alliteration

  5. Assonance is the repetition of the same vowel ( A,E,I,O, & U) sound. EXAMPLE: Robustly treading, I will see Deeply breathing, I will know Always being, I will wonder Ever reaching, I will meld Warrior with a beginner’s mind. ASSONANCE

  6. Consonance is the repetition of the same consonant sound in words with different main vowels. Examples: Little, rattle, bottle Mice, space, truce Consonance

  7. Eye rhymes occur when 2 or more words look like they rhyme rather than sound like they rhyme. EXAMPLES: There upon her jewel crowned head She wore King Rupert silver bead. You can climb the root, Foot following foot in the dim air. Eye/Visual Rhyme

  8. Occurs at the end of lines. To determine end rhyme scheme, assign a letter to each end word. Lines with last words that rhyme are given the same letter.
