  3. Objectives: • Students will be able to describe Benjamin Banneker’s argument about freedom for African Americans to Thomas Jefferson in order to draft an essay explaining what being a good American is means.

Focus Lesson: Benjamin B.… • Direct Instruction • Analogy: a comparison made between two different things to show similarity. • Argument from analogy: compares two things and concludes that because certain things are similar in some respects, the two will be similar in others. • Guided Practice: “Excerpts from a Letter…” (handout)
