  1. Flying Squirrel Payden Trujillo 1st Period Echolocation

  2. Background Info.- Where they live • Flying squirrels are usually found in North America, where there are tall trees. • The Siberian Flying Squirrel ranges from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. • There are many types of flying squirrels. It depends on the location.

  3. What they eat • Flying squirrels eat a big variety of many different things. Some are required in their diet, some are not. • Often, what a flying squirrel eats depends upon geographic availability of a given food source, seasonal availability of a given food source. • The southern flying squirrel has a diet very similar to that of the northern flying squirrel, however, there are differences - mainly due to food type availability. Food types vary according to geographic location. For example, the southern flying squirrel will eat pecans in the southern part of its range, but not in the northern part of its range, as the pecan tree does not grow naturally in northern climates.

  4. Southern Flying Squirrel • • seeds of various varieties • • insects • • spiders • • slugs, snails • • tree and shrub buds • • flowers • • fruits of many trees and shrubs • • berries • • fungi • • bird eggs, nestlings • • bark cambium • • carrion, especially in winter months • • tree sap • mast tree crops of all types, including acorn

  5. Northern Flying Squirrel • fungi • • lichens • • mast tree crops • • seeds of various varieties • • insects • • tree and shrub buds • • flowers • • fruits of many trees and shrubs • • berries • • spiders • • slugs, snails • • bird eggs, nestlings • • bark cambium • • carrion • • tree sap

  6. What eats Them • Hawks, Owls, bobcats, weasels, housecats and other animals that live in North America.

  7. How a flying squirrel uses echolocation • A flying squirrel uses echolocation which effectively emit sounds in short bursts and listen carefully to the echo in order to determine the location, the size, and possibly the density of the objects that the sound waves bounce off of.

  8. How a flying squirrel uses echolocation • A flying squirrel uses echolocation which effectively emit sounds in short bursts and listen carefully to the echo in order to determine the location, the size, and possibly the density of the objects that the sound waves bounce off of.

  9. Reasons why they use echolocation • They use it while looking for food • And also finding their way around at night.

  10. Conclusion • All in all, the flying squirrel is a pretty interesting animal. It is one of many animals to effectively use echolocation. I found that some people keep them as pets. However, this isn’t a good idea. Besides it being a wild animal, it could never effectively use it’s echolocation if kept inside a house. All in all though, the flying squirrel is a great animal.
