  3. History • NY Colony was first witnessed in 1609 by Henry Hudson • Peter Minuit claimed it years later. • Both a part of the New Netherlands until 1664 • The takeover was on August 27, 1664. • Renamed the area New York • New Jersey was split into East and West Jersey by Quakers until 1702.

  4. Government -Mostly used as a trading port at first -Became proprietary -Switched to royal

Economy The economies of the New York and New Jersey Colonies depended on: • Fishing and Trading: the Hudson River. • Commercial agriculture: corn and wheat; livestock: beef and pork • Industry: production of iron ore, lumber, hemp, coal, textiles, furs, and shipbuilding. • Indentured servants

  7. Culture -Women were inferior to males. -All professions were respected; Equal -The Dutch had a clean and elegant lifestyle. -Four social groups: -Small Farmers -Craftsmen -Merchants -Service Providers (business men). -Very Diverse -Dutch and English were mostly spoken -Religiously tolerant.

  8. The Population By 1750: • NY: About 80,000 • NJ: About 70,000 Diversity

  9. Association with Natives • Iroquois were upstate New York • With fur trade, Natives and Dutch were peaceful • End of fur trade in mid-1600s= Bloody wars
