  3. Cuba • After the Spanish American War Cuba was under military rule and the same Spanish officials stayed in office. • Platt Amendment- part of Cuba’s constitution that the U.S. insisted they put in: • No foreign power can control its territory • The U.S. can intervene in Cuba • Cuba cannot go into debt. • The U.S. can buy or lease land for naval or refueling stations. • The U.S. would not leave Cuba until Cuba adopted the amendment. • Cuba became a U.S. protectorate- a country who is partially controlled by a stronger power.

  4. Filipinos Rebel • After the Spanish-American War, Filipinos believed they would get their independence, but they didn’t. • Philippine-American War- The same thing that Spain did to the Cubans was done by the U.S. in the Philippines. (Concentration Camps) • The war lasted 4 years and cost $400 million…20 times more than they paid for the islands. • After the war the U.S. set up a government similar to Puerto Rico and in 1946, the Philippines became an independent republic.

  5. China • Open Door Notes- John Hay issued a series of letters to the leaders of nations who had claims in China, that stated they should share their trading rights with the U.S. • This meant that no country would have a monopoly on trade in China. • The other nations agreed.

  6. Boxer Rebellion • Many Chinese resented the fact that many foreign countries dominated their large cities. • Chinese secret societies formed and planned to get rid of all of the foreigners. • The Boxer society killed hundreds of missionaries and foreigners. • The foreign countries of Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and the U.S. put down the Boxer Rebellion within two months.
