What Year Do Schools Look At? • The previous year’s FINAL grades for Reading, Math, Science, & Social Studies • The previous year’s ISAT scores • The previous year’s attendance (as needed, depends on the school) Ex. If I am in 6th grade, ESSE will look at my 5th grade grades & ISATs Or, If I am in 8th grade HS’s will look at my 7th grade grades & ISATs

How To Help Your Chances • Come to School & be here ON TIME! • When students are late or miss school they are missing vital instruction that might be on the test! • STUDY! • Use flash cards, read and write out information you are studying in class on for the ISATs as ways to help you memorize the information

More ways to boost your ISAT/Improve your grades GRADES • HW, HW, HW!!!!! • Complete all work, Classwork, HW, Reports, Articles, & projects ON TIME and AS REQUESTED • Class Participation • Put forth the maximum effort • Talk to your teachers! ISATs • Practice test taking skills • Use flash cards • Take practice tests • Practice relaxation skills • Make sure you are well rested and have eaten breakfast before days of testing

Academic Centers (For 6-7th grades) The following are for 8th grade only: Selective Enrollment/Military Academies Magnet HS International Bachelorette (IB) Arts, Double, Honors, Special Programs Charter/Contract HS Career Academies Special Education Schools Neighborhood Schools Private Schools

Elementary School Selective Enrollment (ESSE) • Elementary School Selective Enrollment (ESSE) • www.cpsoae.org • i.e. Whitney Young Academic Center, Lincoln Park International Gifted for 7th and 8th grade Eligibility: Regional Gifted Center:  90th percentile in reading & math Classical School:      80th percentile in reading & math Academic Center:     70th percentile in reading & math IB Preparatory Prgm: 90th percentile in reading & 80th percentile in math 80th percentile in reading & 90th percentile in math

ESSE • Applications available early October 2012 • 900 point scale (same as Selective Enrollment) • 300 pts from previous year’s grades • 300 pts from previous years ISAT scores • 300 pts from test that will be taken between Dec-Feb • 6th grade best year to apply for Whitney Young Academic Center (followed by 8th grade)

Selective Enrollment High Schools (SEHS) • www.cpsoae.org • Selective Enrollment is decided based on a point scale system. • You can score up to 900 pts. • Your points are determined from your 7th grade school year • You can apply if you scored a minimum of 5 in your stanine for math and reading • Special Ed requirements stanine total 10 between reading and math.

  11. Selective Enrollment Scoring • Grades: Points are calculated for reading, math, science, and social studies. A=75, B=50, C=25 for a maximum of 300 pts. • Test Scores: are based on your percentile rankings from the reading comprehension and total math sections of your 7th grade tests for a maximum of 300 pts. • Selective Enrollment Test: exam will take place in Dec/Feb and you can earn a maximum of 300 pts. • Attendance: Attendance is not counted for Selective Enrollment this year, but may be re-instated next year.

  15. Understanding the Process • First Round is divided into Rank order and Tier plus Rank order. • Rank order is the rank of student’s raw score, ie. 850 out of 900. (30%) • Tiers are divided by 4. CPS has classified zip codes throughout the city into 4 tiers, accepting 25% from each tier. (70%) • Each student will have only one school potentially accept them. • End of Feb you will find out acceptance/ not acceptance from schools

Principal Discretion If you did not get accepted into a Selective Enrollment school, there is the Principal Discretion process (only up to an additional 5% of students chosen) Brooks: 10 seats Jones: 8 seats King: 12 seats Lane: 52 seats Lindblom: 10 seats Northside:12 seats Payton: 8 seats Westinghouse: 11 seats W Young: 12 seats ****Numbers differ every year

Magnet Schools • www.cpsoae.edu (IB, Double Honors, Arts & special Programming) NEW PROCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • International Bachelorette (IB) • 1 application for all IB schools • NO IB TESTING / possible interviews • Other Magnets • Will have options to potentially fill out more than one application per school, i.e. Lincoln Park & Curie • Senn HS has new Fine Arts programming.

Charter/Contract/Special Education & Career Academy Schools • http://www.cps.edu/Schools/Find_a_school/Pages/Findaschool.aspx (check ONLY the type of school interested in) • Popular Schools: ChiArts, Noble Network, YWLC, ACE Tech, CAAT • Admissions (separate deadlines) • Application, usually must answer questions or write essay. • Students chosen through a lottery (luck of the draw), the more schools you apply that are charter, the better the odds for acceptance.

  20. Private Schools • 2 types: Catholic & Independent (schools that cost $$) Catholic • No application • Entrance Exam is Sat. Jan 12th at 9am • Show up at 8:30 with $25, pencil, (calculator)*** not all schools • Can only test at one school • The school you test at is the only school you can get academic financial aide to. • Important to shadow ahead of time to find out which one is your top choice. (Columbus Day we are off and they are in session, call and make an apt.)

Independent Schools • Examples are: Francis Parker, Latin, & the Lab School; [Illinois Math & Science Academy (IMSA) – starts in 10thgrade] • Get the school application • Must take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) • Register online & pay fee • Can test at any of the locations, pick the date that works for you
