DESIGN OF THE PROJECT Objectives: • To study and analyze the key points that the doctors consider while prescribing Ophthalmic drugs. • To identify the preferences of ophthalmologists for different ophthalmic drugs in various ophthalmic ailments . • To propose strategy to promote the above molecules based on the findings of prescription pattern of ophthalmologists . Scope of the study: • This study is conducted to explore the current prescription pattern of physicians with respect to different ophthalmic drug options. This study reveals the factors which doctors consider when they prescribe the above drugs. The study is conducted in major hospitals of Hyderabad.

  7. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY • Type of research • Descriptive Research • Target population • The target population under this study is Ophthalmologists present in Hyderabad. Major hospitals have been taken into consideration. • Sampling Method • Random sampling method. • Sample size: • 51 ophthalmologists • Limitation of the study • Some Doctors were not helpful in responding to questionnaire due to time constraint. • Study is limited to ophthalmologists of Hyderabad hence study cannot be generalised. • Bias among the respondents due to the nature of the project.

  8. Analysis & Interpretation • The research in general shows that majority of ophthalmologists treat more than 20 patients per day which indicates that there is good scope of ophthalmic drugs. • Preference among various antibiotics for treatment of ophthalmic infective conditions drugs most preffered is Moxifloxacin, followed by Gatifloxacin and least preffered is Bascifloxacin • In Preferences among conventional antibiotics Tobramycin followed by Amikacin is the most preffered and gentamycin is the least preffered . • Preference of antibiotics in combination with Moxifloxacin and Gatifloxacin is Prednisolone then Fluorometholone followed by Loteprednol is the most preffered and least preference is for dexamethasone and then ketorolac. • Ophthalmologist’s considerations before prescribing treatment of ocular allergy most preference is for Safety and then for Efficacy and least for preservative safe.

  9. Contd… • According to preference of molecules in an ocular allergic condition the most preffered molecule is Loteprednol followed by Fluorometholone and the least preffered is dexamethasone. • Prostaglandin analogue preferred in OHT and POAG is most towards Travoprost and Latanoprost and least is Tafluprost. • Preferences parameter of selection of PGA the highest preference is Safety and then control of IOP fluctuations and the least preference is Preservative Free. • Preference of PGA in combination the highest preferred drug in combination with timolol is Travoprost followed by Latanoprost and least preference is for Tafluprost. • For preference of ophthalmic antioxidants/eye nutrients in chronic ailments the eye nutrients are preffered most in cases of AMD (all doctors preffered) and then Chronic Dry Eyes and the least preference was for Cataract. • .

  10. Contd.. • For Effectiveness of eye nutrients in treatment or management of indications it is said that the eye nutrients used in various chronic ailments have significant effect • Preferences of Eye Nutrients in Combination the highest preference is highest in case of lutein and zeazanthin and then omega fatty acids and least for minerals and Vit E& C. • Preference in brands among various eye nutrients the favorite brand among ophthalmologists is for NEW I-SITE AND least for Lutivit and Macugold . All doctors did not respond in this case only 27 doctors responded. • Expectation from Pharma Industry is the highest expectation from Pharma Industry is Quality and then Regular Visit and least for Medical Updates.

  21. FINDINGS After going through the analysis and the interpretation of the data, the following points given below can be considered as the findings of the study: • Most of the doctors in Hyderabad see more than 20 patients. It indicates that there is very good market potential for the ophthalmic drugs . • Moxifloxacin is most favorite drug of doctors. Bascifloxacin is least preffered. It is a new drug by Bausch and Lomb but its effectiveness is still not known among many doctors. • Among Conventional Antibiotics, Tobramycin is most preffered , followed by amikacin and then chloramphenicol and then gentamycin . • In various diseases with respect to preference of doctors in prescribing a particular combination reveals that moxifloxacin is more preffered than gatifloxacin . Prednisolone is most preffered drug with moxifloxacin followed by fluorometholone. With gatifloxacin only prednisolone is preffered but this preference is less compared to preference with gatifloxacin.

  22. FINDINGS • Ophthalmologists are concerned about safety of the drug on top priority and they are least concerned about preservatives while prescribing anti-allergic drugs. • On Comparison among different molecules as a treatment option for allergy, Loteprednol is most preferred molecule followed by fluorometholone and dexamethasone is least preffered . • Travoprost is the most preferred molecule among all PGAs as treatment of POAG and OHT. • For selection of PGA parameters most important parameter is Safety on long term use and least was for Preservative Safe . • For combination with timolol greatest preference was for travoprost.

  23. FINDINGS • Eye nutrients is preferred majorly for AMD and then for Oxidaive Stress and least for glaucoma and cataract. • Effectiveness of eye nutrients is significant on clinical use. • For Preferences of eye nutrients most preference goes for lutien and zeazanthin and then for omega 3 fatty acids. • Among favourite brand of eye nutrients New I site is most preffered . Most doctors did not opt for answering the options. • Ophthalmologists expect quality products on the top priority from pharma industry followed by regular visit. Some doctors also expect economic products in ophthalmic segment from pharma industry.
