3. What is ARTstor? ARTstor is a non-profit organization created by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. ARTstor has developed a digital library of images (including art, architecture and archeology) and descriptive data. ARTstor also provides software tools to enable active use of the images. The tools support a wide range of uses including analyzing images, saving groups of images online, and creating and delivering presentations both online and offline. This is a resource available only for non-commercial, educational uses.

4. What will I see in ARTstor? Images • Digital images of art, architecture and archeology browsable by collection, category, and Image Group. • ARTstor's definition of "art" is encompassing. It includes architecture, painting, photography, prints, drawings, sculpture, decorative arts and design, as well as archeological and anthropological objects. Image descriptions • Descriptive data about each digital image including such information as creator, title, object date, creator birth/death dates. Most data include subject headings allowing searching by topics.

5. What are the levels of access? There are three levels of access for ARTstor users. Unregistered users • No registration or logon are required • Able to search, browse and analyze images and data Registered Users • Registration is required with email address and password • Able to save Image Groups and personal notes • Able to download the Offline Image Viewer Instructors • Registration is required with access code and password available from institutional ARTstor contact. Go to “Instructor Privileges Manager” under “Tools” to get privileges • Able to create folders for sharing Image Groups with students and colleagues • Able to add shareable comments to images • Able to upload images into Personal Collections on ARTstor (coming soon!)

6. What can I do with ARTstor? Keyword Search for images • Articles, punctuation and capitalization are not required • The underscore (_) can represent any one character  • The asterisk (*) can represent zero, one or several characters • The dollar sign ($) will expand search results to include items that stem from a word • The question mark (?) will expand search results to include similarly spelled items  Exercise • From the Welcome Page, search for “harnett” across all collections. • Use the navigation tools in the upper left-hand corner to page through search results to the last page.

7. What can I do with ARTstor? Analyze images The Image Viewer provides you with an enlarged view of one image or a pair of images and tools with which you can zoom in on details and pan to different sections. Exercise • Double-click on “Emblems of Peace” to open that image in the Image Viewer. • Analyze the image by zooming in on details and panning around the image. • Without closing the Image Viewer, click on the search results page. • Double-click on “After the Hunt” to open it. • Restore the other Image Viewer window by locating the icon in the taskbar and clicking it. • After comparing the images side-by-side, close both Viewers.

8. What can I do with ARTstor? View image data The Data Window provides you with an view of the image description. The data can be viewed by double-clicking a thumbnail caption or by selecting the “Data Window” icon in the Image Viewer. Exercise • Double click on the caption beneath the thumbnail for “The Old Violin” to open the Data Window. • Analyze the data. • Click on the “Image Properties” tab to view the digital file information. • Close the data window.

9. What can I do with ARTstor? Advanced Search for images The Advanced Search window will allow you to search within specific data fields (Creator, Title, Location, Subject, etc.) The Advanced Search also offers boolean logic (AND/OR/NOT) to link words and phrases for more precise queries. The same wildcards are available as in the Keyword Search Exercise • Select “Advanced Search” from the toolbar. • In the left side of the form that opens select the “Mellon International Dunhuang Archive”. • In the right side of the form, enter “bodhisattvas” and select “Title” from the drop-down field list. • Select “AND” from the first field in the next row. • Enter “silk” in the text field and select “Material” from the list. • Click the “Search” button to view your results.

10. What can I do with ARTstor? Browse collections Each collection in the ARTstor Library is made up of several categories. You can browse a collection by paging through all the images in the entire collection or one specific category. Exercise • Return to the Welcome Page by clicking on the ARTstor icon in the upper left-hand corner of the Thumbnail Page. • Under the “Browse Collections” section, choose the “Museum of Modern Art - Architecture and Design Collection”. • On the Collection page, click on the arrow next to “Architectural Drawings” to expand the category list. • Click on the “1970” category and view the thumbnails that appear. • Click on the “Browse Collection” toolbar item and click on the folder for “Architectural Drawings” and then click on “1980”.

11. What can I do with ARTstor? Analyze images You can sort images by Creator/Artist or Title. The Image Viewer also provides tools for further image analysis. Exercise • Under the “View” menu “Sort Displayed Images by … Creator/Artist”. • Double-click the “TV in Picture Window Apparatus” thumbnail. • Use the icons in the lower right-hand corner of the Image Viewer to: • Print the image • Open the data window • View the list of other images • Jump to “The Peak, project Kowloon” • Maximize the window • Remove the controls / Replace the controls • Download the image

12. What can I do with ARTstor? Open Image Groups Image Groups that have been created by users with Instructor Privileges and made public to share are available for all users at your institution (even those that have not registered) to view. Exercise • From the “Image Groups” menu, select “Open an Image Group”. • Click on the arrow next to the “Image Group Folder” drop-down menu to expand the list. Select the folder called “ARTstor: What will I see”. • Click on the arrow next to the “Image Group” drop-down menu to expand the list. Select the group called “Political Caricatures”. • Click on the “Open” button to display this Image Group on the Thumbnail Page.

13. What can registered users do? Display Image Group print preview The Image Group print preview function will allow you to review and print an entire Image Group. This format offers a thumbnail copy of the image with its accompanying data. Exercise • With the “Political Caricatures” Image Group still open, select “Image group print preview” from the “View” menu. • A new window will open, displaying the Image Group in the print preview format. • Select the printer icon from the toolbar of that new browser window to print a copy of the Image Group. • You can also select “Save as …” from the “File” menu to download the html file and images for adding this page to a course web site.
