  1. LEAP Survival Workshop for Parents Westdale Middle School March 10, 2009

  2. Welcome • We are glad you are here! • We are going to share some of the strategies your children are learning in the LEAP Tutoring Program. • By reinforcing these strategies at home, you can help your children prepare for the LEAP test.

  3. LEAP 2009 1 Test Dates: April 1-3, 6-7 LEAP Testing LEAP Testing Easter Holiday/Spring Break

  4. We will be looking at 4 testing strategies… R·E·D T³ Making Predictions Louisiana Pass

  5. R·E·D Restate the question Explain or provide Examples Defend your answer

  6. How will students benefit from attending the tutoring sessions? Students will benefit from the tutoring sessions because they will get test-taking tips and learn what kind of questions to expect on the test. They will also get a chance to practice tackling each type of question. This tutoring program can benefit all students. Question Restate Explain Defend

  7. Practice at Home • Ask your children to use this strategy to justify requests: “Why should I let you go to the movies with Alyssa?” “You should let me go to the movies with Alyssa because I am going to pay for my ticket with the money I made babysitting. I promise to be careful and be back before curfew. Since I have promised to behave responsibly, I think you should let me go.” Parent Child

  8. Tackle the question Think about the answer Terminate the wrong answer

  9. On a game show, would you have a better chance of selecting the box with a prize if there are four boxes or if there are three? Why? • Let’s look at testing… • In multiple choice testing, usually there are 4 responses. If you guess answer A, you will have a one in four chance of guessing correctly. That means you have a 25% chance of getting it right.

  10. If you cross out one answer that you know is incorrect, you just increased your chance of getting a correct answer to 33%. • If you can get rid of 2 incorrect answers, you are up to 50%! • Most of the time, you can increase your score almost a whole level just by eliminating incorrect answers.

  11. Practice at Home • Have your child rehearse this strategy using one of the practice tests. • When he gets to a problem or question that he is uncertain about, ask him if he has read all the answer choices. • Have him eliminate one answer he knows is wrong. • If he can eliminate two answers, he can increase his odds to 50%!

  12. Making Predictions This is a skill students will be expected to know on the LEAP test. They will need to be able to look at a map or graph and make predictions as to what it depicts. They will need to be able to make predictions about what will happen next in a story.

  13. Practice at Home • As you watch TV as a family, have your child predict what will happen next. • Ask your child to share the plot of a book he is reading. Ask him about what might happen next or how the story might end.

  14. Practice at Home • By asking your child to make predictions about what he is watching on TV or reading about in a book, you are encouraging him to think about and analyze the plot. • This skill will help him on the LEAP test!

  15. Louisiana Pass • Encourage students to complete LEAP practice activities on the Louisiana State Department of Education website: www.louisianapass.org. • Click on • For the first visit only, the login is student. • The password is tiger .

  16. Practice at Home Students will be asked to create a new screen name. The program will assign a password. Make sure students write down their new screen name and password.

  17. Practice at Home Students will receive an immediate score for all multiple choice questions. Students will receive feedback on constructed response items within a few days.

  18. Practice at Home • They will have to log back onto the website using their screen name and password to view the results. • Students will be able to see their original answer as well as feedback and a sample response.

  19. Tips for the Day of the Test • Make sure children are well-rested. • Serve a nourishing, high-protein breakfast • Try to reduce anxiety on the morning of the test by making sure they are at school on time. • Help ease their anxiety by telling them to just do their best. • Remind students that the test is not timed. They should not rush through it. • Encourage students to read all directions carefully.

  20. Tips for the Day of the Test • Encourage students to THINK before they answer. Make sure they understand the question and read all the answer choices. • Look for key words like choose, describe, explain, compare, identify. • Look out for words like except, not, and but. • Remind students that it is okay to mark on the test booklet. They might underline important words, cross out wrong answers, make calculations in the margins, etc.
