  2. The following ideals and excerpts are taken directly from the Declaration of Independence – the first founding document produced by the United States of America. • The Declaration of Independence outlined the ideals and dreams for the new country.

  3. Opportunity • “that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

  4. Definition: The promise that people should have the chance to attain their hopes and dreams.

  5. Equality • “All men are created equal.”

  6. Definition: The condition of being equal.

  7. Rights • “They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.”

  8. Definition: Basic conditions guaranteed to each person.

  9. Democracy • “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

  10. Definition: A form of government that places power in the hands of the people.

  11. Liberty • “that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”

  12. Definition: The freedom to think or act without being limited by unnecessary force.
