  4. Developmental ReadinessKen Curran, Ph.D. • Identity • Physical changes • Emotional changes • Standards-based report cards vs. grades • Parent Do’s -Be active & get to know your child’s friends. Maintain that strong relationship with your child. Stay involved in their activities. Impromptu conversation on their time will be more effective than “scheduling a time to talk.

  5. Parent Do’s (continued) • Be a great listener • Be clear about your expectations and follow-through with stated rewards & consequences. • Be a great role model, be patient and treat your son/daughter with respect. Use praise & encouragement & don’t over-react.

  6. Parent Do’s (continued) • If a sensitive topic comes up, talk about it in a way that is consistent with your value system (otherwise the child might look for other answers through the media or friends). • Be inquisitive, but be careful with interfering.

Middle School Structure We are a TEAM At SLMS, a team is a small learning community of students, teachers, guidance counselors & administrators that provide a developmentally appropriate model for learning for middle school age students. Each SLMS team represents about 85 students of the 255 projected incoming 6th graders.

  8. 6th Grade Teams • Blazers • Explorers • Voyagers • Each 6th grade team consists of the following teachers: • Language Arts • Math • Science • Social Studies • Learning Support

  9. What does a Team mean? • Students are assigned randomly • Each team is equal in student ability • Team concept supports students as they transition to the middle school • Team Building Activities

Academic Program • Students are heterogeneously grouped except in Math and Language Arts • Students have a full complement of specials • Each day has 9 class periods beginning with homeroom at 7:55 • There are 3 lunch periods: 10:16, 11:01 11:46 • SEP-Study Enrichment Period is held at the end of 9th period • The school day concludes at 2:55 • SLMS is on a 6-day cycle with a Day 7 to accommodate music rehearsals

  11. Class Schedule • Language Arts & Math • 65 minutes each • Scheduled back-to-back • All Other Classes • 42 minutes each • SEP • Study Enrichment Program • 2:35-2:55 each day

  12. Math (65 Minutes) • 3 Academic Levels • Accelerated Connected Math Program • Hetero. Connected Math Program • Basic Connected Math Program • Math curriculum is aligned to the PA Mathematics Standards and Assessment Anchors • The middle level math curriculum prepares all students—at a minimum—to take Algebra I in 9th grade • AMP (Accelerated Math Program) students will take Geometry or Algebra II at Penncrest

Science & Social Studies(42Minutes) • Both subject areas are heterogeneously grouped & meet daily • Science • Focuses on Life Science & Ecology • Method of instruction is inquiry/discovery based, learning through laboratory investigations • Social Studies • Focuses on Asia, Africa, Europe • Specific emphasis on Geography, Culture, Economics & Government

World Language(42Minutes) • Students have one semester of French and one semester of Spanish • Classes meet daily • Curricula scope & sequence will focus on communication & culture • Students who successfully complete the middle school World Language Curriculum should be prepared to enter the second year of their chosen World Language at Penncrest HS

  15. Language Arts(65 Minutes) • 3 Academic Levels • Enhanced Language Arts (ELA) • Hetero. Language Arts (LA) • Basic Language Arts (LA) • The Language Arts Curriculum is aligned to PA Standards and Assessment Anchors (which include listening, speaking, reading & writing)

Special Area Classes (42 Minutes) • 6-day cycle, 2 periods per day • Specials Schedule • Yearly • Physical Education • Music • General • Band/Orchestra • Chorus • Art • Semester SLMS Success Technology Center • Quarterlies Applied Technology Exploring Technology Family and Consumer Science Health Education

Library Services • Online resources • RTM District Catalog • Subscription Databases • PA POWER Library • Ethical use of information, learning about plagiarism, taking notes, citing sources, etc. • Weekly library visits through Language Arts classes • Collaborative planning with teachers • Instruction in research skills
