Characteristics of Gifted ChildrenDeveloped by Dr. Linda Silverman: • Reasons well (good thinker) • Learns rapidly • Has extensive vocabulary • Has an excellent memory • Has a long attention span (if interested) • Sensitive (feelings hurt easily) • Shows compassion • Perfectionist • Intense • Morally sensitive • Has strong curiosity • Perseverant in their interests • Has high degree of energy • Prefers older companions or adults • Has a wide range of interests • Has a great sense of humor • Early or avid reader (if too young to read, loves being read to) • Concerned with justice, fairness • Judgment mature for age at times • Is a keen observer • Has a vivid imagination • Is highly creative • Tends to question authority • Has facility with numbers • Good at jigsaw puzzles

Gr. 2-5 Gifted Cluster Grouping Regular Classroom with Cluster Grouping Superior Cognitive identified students are deliberately placed in classes with a teacher who has received professional development in meeting the needs of gifted learners. Differentiated instruction for clustered students is delivered by the regular classroom teacher. Criteria: A gifted qualifying composite score on a state approved gifted test

Gifted Math Plus Gr. 4 & 5Criteria: State gifted qualifying composite score on a gr. 3 & above state approved gifted test • The curriculum covers on grade math curriculum supplemented by a variety of challenging materials. • Students are not accelerated by grade level curriculum • Pace is determined by the class • Class is differentiated to meet a variety of skill levels through a guided math approach • Meeting the social and emotional needs:

Mrs. Gagel • 4thgrade- Students are showing strategies to solve larger multiplication problems using screen casting apps on the ipad.  • 5th grade- Students are beginning division and working towards the normal algorithm (the one we learned) from our more conceptual models.  Time is given at least weekly to explore Scratch programming on the computers.  The end result will be a video game format where math skills are practiced.  • Mrs. Gagel’s goal is that students feel that math is a challenge, but that it is an enjoyable activity in the same way that some enjoy reading or writing.

Gr. 6-7 Gifted Language ArtsCriteria: CogAT 129+ levels 9+ and an advanced or accelerated score on the current year’s Reading OAATeacher: Mrs. Jimenez Gifted Language Arts Grades 6-7 Class made up of superior cognitive students Middle school language arts core curriculum is taught at an accelerated pace Students are not accelerated to the next year’s language arts curriculum; they are enriched with more challenging materialat the current grade level. Students analyze the elements of classic and contemporary young adult novels with age-appropriate themes through literature circles. There is an emphasis on English grammar and usage rules for effective written work (i.e., essays, journals, and commentaries).

Gr. 6-8 Gifted MathCriteria: 95th percentile or above on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills Math section Teacher: Mrs. McMahon Gifted Accelerated Math Grades 6 • By the end of the course, the students will have covered the core Ohio 6-8th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. • Students will take the 7th grade Math OAA • Students need the math teacher’s recommendation to qualify for the next level of gifted math. Gifted Accelerated Math Grade 7 • The course curriculum covers the Ohio 9th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. • The course follows a constructivist integrated approach to mathematics with a strong focus on linear and nonlinear functions and relationships. • Students will take the 8th grade Math OAA • Students receive High School Credit for this course. • In the school year 2014-2015, students will be required to take end of course exams for high school credit. Gifted Accelerated Math Grade 8 • The course curriculumcovers the Ohio 10th Grade Mathematics indicators and benchmarks. • The course follows a constructivist integrated approach to mathematics with a strong focus on geometry, trigonometric relationships and matrices. • These gifted math students will be prepared to enter the high school at the 11th grade level of integrated mathematics. • Students receive High School Credit for this course. • In the school year 2014-2015, students will be required to take end of course exams for high school credit.
