International Institutions Schools include the United Kingdom, Australearn group (Australia, New Zealand), Irish and Welsh institutions, Europe and Hong Kong Students can manage all their international applications through Naviance Students should meet individually with their counsellor for applications to these institutions Examples would be St. Andrews, or St. Georges in London, Bath, Science Po, American University in Paris, Design School in Italy, Hong Kong University Stirling University - Scotland

How to Choose an International School Criteria Edinburgh – Law School % of population that is made up of international students Language of Instruction Programs Available Location and culture Familiarity with programs and career opportunities (ie – does the degree transfer to North America?) Potential to live and work abroad

Advantages to studying abroad Direct Entry Professional Programs – Law, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Vet, Dentistry Access to extensive History and Culture Proximity to Europe or the Middle East for travel Opportunity to study in world class Institutions with diverse student populations Students develop a global perspective in their chosen major

UCAS Applications Earlier deadlines than the common app in US Vet, Medical ,Cambridge and Oxford are early October Sept. 15th for Oxford if want an interview All other applications by January 15th – Art & Design have until June 30th– but apply early (Jan 1 recommended) Teacher recommendation is completed on-line No counsellor recommendation required but counsellor can add a comment to the teacher recommendation

UCAS Applications On-Line www.ucas.com UCAS and individual institutions should also be added to your Naviance account Need to code your account to Crofton House and you will require a password Student must mark as completed in order for application to be processed to the next stage Once app is submitted to UCAS – it cannot be changed Students must check terms and conditions of their contractual offer letter which is always issued by UCAS – not the institution
  7. UCAS Application Includes: Personal Statement Projected early marks Teacher recommendation only (no Counsellor) LNAT or BMAT as required for Medicine and Law (marks sent directly to UCAS) Art and Design program require a portfolio Once submitted it cannot be changed or altered

Selection of Courses and Offers Students can select only 5 choices (4 for Medicine) Students responsibility to check that the program you apply to is open to International students from Canada (some restrictions) Once applied, transcripts and reference letters from outside parties are sent in December Each university makes their decision and this is communicated through UCAS to students

Interviews Can be conducted in person or via Skype – arrange as far in advance as possible Students need to prepare for the interview (Questions and answers) Mock interviews available with Mrs. Fraser or Ms. Manhas by appointment Interview Tip sheets with behavioral sample questions available in Student Services

Offers Are conditional or unconditional Conditions range but are based on final school marks If you are below the conditions, your offer will be rescinded and you can access EXTRA or CLEARING to find a place Applicants reply using TRACK to accept or decline – through UCAS You can choose one firm and one insurance school

The Personal Statement Must be succinct as the space is limited Should indicate why you want to study abroad Needs to be suitable for all 5 choices as all your schools receive the same statement through UCAS Detailed Instructions via power points from UCAS can be located on the school website: www.croftonhouse.ca Have a trusted adult review your application for errors or omissions, as well as “tone” and provide a copy to your counsellor Attend the yearly visits in the fall from these institutions
  13. Oxford & Cambridge May choose only one of these school If want interview apply by Sept. 15th

Other International Schools Applications vary as do deadlines Work with your counsellor to meet those deadlines and to coordinate the delivery of supporting documents AbuDhabi – application is through NYU Australearn – central application for New Zealand and Australia Hong Kong/Korea – individual applications

Mrs. Fraser/Ms. Manhas are available for parent and student meetings and to assist with your queries All applications require a student visa application – begin early as this can be daunting A school visit is highly recommended Financial discussions as to cost and tuition should take place early. Take into account the fluctuating value of foreign currencies to the dollar over 3 to 4 years
