Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Project focuses on: • Neretva River Basin (originates in BiH and flows into the Adriatic) • Bosna River Basin (begins in BiH and flows into the Sava River, which is BiH’s northern boundary with Croatia)
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Project Objectives are to: • develop the Wastewater Improvement Plan • further strengthen the Joint BiH/Croatian Working group • develop and implement high-priority, low-cost water capital investments • disseminate information in BiH and the region for replication elsewhere in the Balkans
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina The Project also aims at: monitoring and evaluating river water quality through following indicators: • Completion of the Wastewater Improvement Plan • Regional co-operation • Reduction of municipal-based pollution
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina The Project comprises 4 components • Component AReduction of River Pollution in BiH • Component BHigh-priority Investments • Component C Natural Wastewater Treatment Pilot • Component D Project Management • Component EReplication. Information Sharing and Implementation
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component A (Reduction of River Pollution in BiH) This component is the basis for all further actions for the Wastewater Improvement Plan and comprises: • Upgrading and Enlargement of the existing Water Information System (WIS) • Study of Biological Monitoring of Rivers and Lakes/Reservoirs (BQS)
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component A : WIS Project comprises three phases: • First Phase : Procurement of Equipment completed by EC - CARDS Program for management of the river watersheds in BiH • Second phase : Collection of Data on surface water, water usage, pollution levels, protection, etc. and development of modules • Third phase : Implementation of Program
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component A : BQS Project comprises three activities: • Collecting Data (on existing laws and regulations, etc) • Reviewing Data • Proposing Institutional Improvements • Developing a Surface Water Quality Monitoring System Activities will be summarized in the BIO Monitoring Manual
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component B (High-priority Investments) • MostarDesign andfirst stage construction of a dual sewer system in the central area • Zivinice (in co-operation with other donors)Construction of some sewer lines, a wastewater treatment plant and an effluent pipeline • TrnovoReconstruction of the wastewater treatment plant • Odzak Reconstruction of the wastewater treatment plant
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component B : Mostar The Mostar Urban Environment and Water Quality Plan of 2004 identified three drainage areas: North Valley Central Valley South Valley Present project comprises Detailed Engineering and (partial) Construction of a Dual Sewer System in the Central Valley of the city
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component B : Mostar Central Valley Dual Sewer System Option
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component B : Trnovo Wastewater Treatment Plant Concrete structures need reconditioning Surface aerators to be replaced Pump Station overgrown
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component B : Odzak Wastewater Treatment Plant badly war damaged Heavy pollution at sewage outflow into stream
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component C (Natural Wastewater Treatment Pilot) The Feasibility Study will address low cost natural treatment of wastewater under due consideration of: • Climatic, hydro-geological, social and institutional conditions • Land management • Available technologies • Easy maintenance aspects • Identification of pilot projects • SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analyses of proposed facilities
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component D (Project Management) This component comprises management and monitoring of the project.
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Component E (Replication, Information Sharing and Implementation) This component finances: • Management training for institutional strengthening • Capacity building for utilities • Drafting of Annual Business Plans for each utility • Replication of project findings and/or conclusions • Monitoring, updating and implementation of theAction Plan
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Finally Total Project Costs?
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Total Project Costs: estimated at 20.3 million US $, of which: • 8.9 million US $ GEF • 5.2 million US $ other donors • 6.2 million US $ the Gvt of BiH
Water Quality Protection Projectin Bosnia & Herzegowina Project Costs by Component • Component AReduction of River Pollution in BiH (0.45 million US$) • Component BHigh-priority Investments (16.39 million US$) • Component C Natural Wastewater Treatment Pilot (1.48 million US$) • Component D Project Management (0.31 million US$) • Component EReplication.
