2. TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there 
for to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in 
your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put 
it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If 
you can find a way to write it using less words that okay, but 
make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your 
notes EXACTLY as it is on the board.

4. Trans-Saharan Trade * The Trans-Sahara trade route 
was the most important part of the 
economy of West Africa. * The main items that were 
exchanged - gold and salt. * The people in the North needed 
gold because it was the basis of the 
currency of most countries. * People in West Africa needed 
salt because it added flavor to food 
and was essential for good health.

5. Trans-Saharan Trade * The North Africans brought 
steel swords, copper and silks. * The West Africans traded 
ivory, local crafts, precious 
woods, and enslaved people. * North African merchants 
also brought the Islamic religion and Arabic language with them.

6. Silent Barter System Gold Salt Can you make a prediction as to what the Silent Barter 
System was by seeing the name?

7. Silent Barter System * Merchants from Ghana kept 
the source of Ghana’s gold a 
secret from North African 
traders. * The North Africans were not 
allowed to visit the gold mines or 
communicate with miners that 
traded with Ghana. * Gold and salt were 
exchanged in this system.

8. Silent Barter System * A trade site was set up and traders brought goods to trade with gold miners. *  If the traders were happy 
with the amount of gold they 
would take it and leave their goods. * If traders wanted more they 
would leave without touching 
anything. * The traders from Ghana

obtaining salt. 4) I am going to give you a number amount of both that 
you want. 5) If the group doesn't supply you with the amount of 
gold you want, leave it alone. If they do, take it and 
leave your salt.
