Update on the delivery of the Incredible Years Programme from Caban Bach, Barnardo’s Background • Barnardo’s has been delivering Incredible Years in Blaenau Ffestiniog for 10 years and has worked closely with the Incredible Years team at Bangor • In 2007 Caban Bach Family Centre opened - full time nursery, 34 places - family support team

  3. Family support team provides • 1 : 1 support • Group work • Father’s Work • Debt and budgeting advice

  4. Rolling programme of Incredible Years courses Funded through • Barnardo’s • Cymorth • Flying Start • Big Lottery Working closely with colleagues at Gwynedd Children & Young People’s Partnership

  5. Expansion of service to new areas • Gwynedd Children & Young People’s Plan 2008 – 11 prioritised parenting support, additional Cymorth funds were secured to develop the work • Courses held at Bala Trawsfynyndd Porthmadog Dolgellau • Core business continued at Blaenau Ffestiniog including 1 Basic 1 Toddler 1 Basic for Nursery Staff 2 School Readiness

Barriers • Finding suitable venues for co-location of parents’ course and mobile crèche • Research needed as to what’s available for parents in the area • Getting referrals through in time to meet the parents before the course • Travelling - cost - time - weather conditions - business insurance cover • Time - building new relationships - setting up room - partners unable to share - admin tours

  7. Benefits • Bringing the Incredible Years Program to a new area - addressing behaviour problems - early intervention - lasting difference for families - research based intervention - credible outcome measurements - promotion of social and academic abilities in children

Benefits • Community based in convenient locations with transport provided • Childcare provided giving children the opportunity to socialise • Social interaction and support for parents • Co-working with other agencies - energising professionals - practical response to high caseloads • Promoting children’s self confidence • Trained, experienced, bilingual staff delivering the course with fidelity

Future Plans • Continue expanding parenting courses to new areas of Gwynedd • Concentrating primarily on the Meirionnydd area • Further develop family support work to complement the Incredible Years work • Working with Gwynedd Children & Young People’s Partnership to implement WAG’s Families First agenda

Courses in 2010 January-March- *Basic course held in Christ’s Church in Bala, with Nursery funding * Toddler course held in Caban Bach Blaenau Ffestiniog with Nursery funding April – July - * Toddler course held in Caban Bach in Blaenau Ffestiniog, with Nursery funding *Basic course for Caban Bach Nursery staff * School Readiness held in Caban Bach Blaenau Ffestiniog with Nursery Provided Sept – Dec - * Basic course in Trawsfynydd, 3 languages, child care and taxi provided. * Toddler course held in Dolgellau, with a Mobile crèche * Toddler course held in Porthmadog, with a mobile crèche, bus fares, Taxis. * School Readiness Pilot with Ysgol Maenofferen, Nursery provided.

  11. January –April 2010Course held in Christ’s Church BalaChildcare provided by Aykroyds NurseryFunding from Flying Start 10 members offered the course – 9 began, 8 completed 1 drop out

  12. April-July Toddler course held in Caban Bach, Nursery funding provided Royal visit! 9 offered, 6 completed, 3 did not complete

  13. September – December Basic course held in Trawsfynydd Childcare was provided by a local childminder and Caban Bach Nursery. Taxis were provided. Course was delivered in Welsh, English and Polish 10 members recruited – 6 completed, 4 drop out

  14. September – December Toddler course held in Dolgellau Leisure centre. Mobile Crèche was provided by 5 Caban Bach staff members Up to 3 cars had to be taken on a weekly basis Eyberg scores were not collected for the younger children

  15. September-December course held in Porthmadog Leisure Centre. Mobile Crèche, Bus Fares, and Taxis provided. Parents attended from Pwllheli, Morfa Nefyn, Penrhyndeudraeth, Porthmadog, and Blaenau Ffestiniog

  16. The course has been invaluable. I have learned so much which i now use in my day to day life, my whole family has benefitted from this course and will for years to come. • Transferable skills! – it works and it will again..... • I felt it has given me the opportunity for reflexion, I have had the time that I needed to think about my children, value them and my family • I have learned that my children are loving, playful and fun to be with, they are wonderful and lovely – things aren’t that bad!
