  2. FBC Quiz: What was the most boring subject you studied in school? HISTORY

  3. HISTORY=BORING

  4. HISTORY=BORING & DANGEROUS

  5. The complete Pentecost Story • Part I : Chapters 2:1-13 ( The Pentecost experience ). • Part II : Chapters 2:14-41 ( The Pentecost message ). • Part III: Chapters 2:42-47 ( The Pentecost church ).

  6. The COMPLETE Pentecost Story. What happened after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit ? Acts 2:14-47

  7. The promise of the Holy Spirit • In O.T. limited to few people for particular tasks, not given to all believers. • Promise of a new spirit to be given to all believers (Ezekiel 36v26-27). • The pouring out of God’s Spirit will be to all people (Joel 2v28-29). • John the Baptist proclaims that Christ will baptize with the Holy Spirit AND fire (Luke 3v16).

  8. The Book of Acts does not record 2-stage experiences as normative. • 10v44-48 :Cornelius Household- represents Gentiles (not 2 stage experience,). • 8v14-17 :Samaritans- indicating the removal of the schism between Jews and Samaritans. • 19v1-7 :Ephesian disciples- not Christians yet, as had not received Jesus (v4).

  9. The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts • Whole groups of people burst out in tongues when the Holy Spirit descended upon them (10v45, 19v6,). • Speaking in tongues was spontaneous without any need to cajole, pressure or practice by loosening of tongues, using music, etc.

  10. Are we receptive to miracles today? “Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine””2v13.

  11. “We must beware of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. In our reformed circles, we need more awareness of the indwelling Spirit and more confidence in him to do his work”. David Cook, pg 72, Teaching Acts. • “And if we have hesitations about some claims to “signs and wonders” today, we must make sure we have not confined both God and ourselves in the prison of Western, rationalistic unbelief”. John Stott, pg 101, The Message of Acts.

  12. COUNTERFEIT EVENTS MAKE US CYNICAL OF ANY MIRACLES THAT OCCUR TODAY.

  13. “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit”. John 3v8

  14. The Bible neither teaches that signs and wonders should be normative nor exceedingly rare from the time of the Apostles till today. God’s will is sovereign, and the Spirit blows as He pleases.

  15. A BIGGER CROWD THEN PENTECOST!

  16. IS THE MESSAGE SIMILAR TO PENTECOST?

  17. The centre focus of thePentecost Message was Jesus Christ, not the Holy Spirit.

  18. Peter’s Sermon on Jesus • His life and ministry (2v22) • His death (2v23) • His resurrection (2v24-32) • His exaltation (2v33-36) • His salvation promise (2v37-39)

  19. Peter’s Sermon on Jesus • Jesus was accredited by God through miracles, signs and wonders. (v22) • You crucified him with wicked men, but God used this to fulfill His will. (v23) • Death could not hold him.(v24) • David prophetically spoke about Jesus(v31,34) • The apostles are eye witnesses to Jesus.(v32) • Jesus is now both Lord and Christ. (v36)

  20. Is it a bird?

  21. Is this Christ?

  22. Are we worshipping the real Jesus? • The real Jesus encompasses his entire life, death, resurrection, ministries and teachings. • The real Jesus centres around the Gospel message.

  23. “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except • Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor 2v2)

  24. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor 1v18

  25. Focus on wedding or marriage? • Focus on Christ or His blessings?

  26. Is our relationship with Christ built on the real Jesus or a fantasy?

  27. What we make of Christ will • determine what God makes of us. • Is our relationship with Christ centered • on the Cross or other things?

  28. Jesus and Pentecost. • The Holy Spirit proclaims Jesus. • The Scripturespoints to Jesus. • The Cross anchors us to Jesus.

  29. What do you see when you look at the Cross?

  30. Christ & Grace. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Eph 2v8-10

  31. Christ & Sufferings. “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, and becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” Phil 3v10

  32. Christ and eternal hope “And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen Peter 5v10-11

  33. Christ & our attitude. “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Phil 2v1-4.

  34. Christ & Church leadership. “ To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who will also share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock”. 1 Peter 5v1-4

  35. Christ & Love. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth” 1 John 3v16-18

  36. “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”. Phil 1v21

  37. Characteristics of the first Church (2v42-47) • Devoted to biblical teaching (v42). • Genuinely caring for each other (v44-46). • Lively in their worship (v47). • Growing the church by word and lifestyle evangelism (v47b-48).

  38. “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal 3v26-28

  39. Characteristics of the first Church (2v42-47) • Devoted to biblical teaching (v42). • Genuinely caring for each other (v44-46). • Lively in their worship (v47). • Growing the church by word and lifestyle evangelism (v47b-48). • Convicted by signs and wonders (v43).
