Student Learning Objectives. • Explain the classification of organisms based on hierarchical taxonomy including kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. • Distinguish the five kingdoms of organisms, and more specific taxonomy of agricultural species of animals. • Identify agricultural animals using a taxonomic key. • Identify the major features of chordates, identify the highlights of vertebrate evolution, and identify the distinguishing characters of fish, birds, and mammals.

  6. Hierarchical Taxonomyand Animal Classification • Taxonomy is the science of identifying and naming organisms. • The classification of organisms is hierarchical in nature, which means that large groups containing many different species are divided into smaller more specific groups.

  7. The Seven Levels of Taxonomic Classification • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species

  8. Binomial nomenclature • A system used to name organisms using a two-part Latin name. • The first part is the genus and this name is always capitalized. • The second part is the species, and it is never capitalized. • Both names should either be underlined or set in italic type.

What is a taxonomic key? • A taxonomic key is used to identify an object unknown to you but that an expert has described. • A taxonomic key is based on the process of elimination in which the user is presented with a sequence of choices, each with a pair of alternatives. • Taxonomic keys can be used to identify just about any object and are used in agriculture to identify plants, animals, or even soil types.

  12. What are the major features of chordates? • To be considered a chordate, an animal must possess: • a notochord • a dorsal hollow neural tube • gill slits • a tail

What three classes within the phylum chordate are agricultural species of animals found? • Osteichthyes • Includes over 26,000 species of bony fish • Skeleton is made of bone instead of cartilage • Skin with mucous glands • Embedded dermal scales • A swimbladder • Examples • Salmon, trout, carp, catfish, bass, walleye, and tilapia.
