  1. GLOBAL – REGIONAL INTEGRATION WORKSHOP ON NATURAL HAZARDS AND DISASTERS Hazards and Disasters Science Plan and Follow-up Activities Asia – Pacific James Terry Chair Steering Group on Natural Hazards and Risk for Asia – Pacific

  2. ICSU ROAP SCIENCE PLANS • ROAP has identified work in natural and human – induced hazards and disasters as a priority • Established a Planning Group consisting of experts in natural and human–induced hazards and disasters, especially on earthquakes, floods and landslides

  3. ICSU ROAP SCIENCE PLANS • In 2008, ICSU ROAP released two reports on Hazards and Disasters: ICSU-ROAP 2008. Earthquakes, Floods and Landslides. Kuala Lumpur, 37pp. ICSU-ROAP 2008. Special Vulnerability of Islands. Kuala Lumpur, 24pp.

  4. RESEARCH / PUBLICATION http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/page10523.html Product Code: SP361 Series: Geological Soc. of London Special Publications Ten Digit ISBN: 1-86239-339-7 Thirteen Digit ISBN: 978-1-86239-339-4 Author/Editor: Edited by J P Terry and J Goff Publisher: GSL Publication Date: 11 January 2012 Binding: Hardback Pages: 232 DescriptionEven a cursory glance at any map of the Asia–Pacific region makes a striking impression: in addition to the large continental landmass the region encompasses a truly vast expanse of ocean, dispersed over which are thousands of islands. Many might say that it could not be a worse time to live in this region. In the past few years we have experienced not only a number of devastating tsunamis, but should not forget either the seemingly endless list of other natural hazards such as tropical cyclones and typhoons, volcanic eruptions, river floods and wildfires. This Special Publication represents an important collection of both conceptual and first-hand field investigations across the Asia–Pacific region. By highlighting some of the recent advances and emerging ideas in natural hazards research, the volume draws together these disparate lines of evidence into a clear regional focus.

  5. RESEARCH SCOPING WORKSHOP ON HAZARDS AND DISASTERSVULNERABLE ISLANDS OF THE WESTERN PACIFIC • Organized from 28 – 29 February 2012 in Kuala Lumpur • Objective was to draft a research programme on natural hazard assessment and disaster risk management for islands of the Western Pacific that can be promoted for funding and implementation in the short and medium – term • Among the outcomes of the workshop were 8 Resolutions, including: • Formation of Steering Group on Natural Hazards and Risk for the Asia– Pacific • A ‘coastal hazards framework’ to be adopted in new research initiatives • Hazards and disasters research should be participatory in nature where possible • An integrated data portal on hazards and disasters to be developed which will be anchored by SEADPRI

  6. ACTIVITIES ACCCOMPLISHED AFTER SCOPING WORKSHOP Title of proposed project for APN funding: Coastal hazards in the Tropical South East Asia–Pacific (TSEAP) Region: identifying long-term risks to reduce vulnerability. • Suggestions on Activities under the APN Opportunity Fund (AOF). • 2012 Annual Regional Call for Research Proposal (ARCP)
