Interactive science notebooks An Interactive Science Notebook (ISN) is… • a student thinking tool • an organizer for inquiry questions and what I learned • a way to access and process the learning utilizing various modalities (writing, drawing, and discussion) • a place for writing rough drafts based on hands-on learning • a formative assessment tool for teachers

Interactive science notebooks What goes where… • Left Side: • Student Output • Lots of Color – the brain remembers things in color better • Beginning of Class Assignment (BOCA) • Essential Question (EQ) • Concept Maps • Drawings • Reflective Writing/Quick Write • Questions • Data and Graph • Songs • Poems • Data from Experiments • Cartoons or Cartoon Strips • Personal Experience Connection • Other Possible Solutions or Possibilities

Interactive science notebooks Getting Started… • Step #4 • add the following Reflection Questions on Page 1 • you will use these as open response questions • when you can’t think of something else to do for your left side entry, use one of these • remember…open responses means a paragraph and a paragraph is 5 or more sentences • what are you curious about • what would you like to test • what was the main idea • what are the important details to remember • how does this relate to your life • what don’t you understand, are there any gaps

Interactive science notebooks Remember…Right Side… • the RIGHT side of the notebook contains information given to you by your teacher... this is ESSENTIAL information that will DEFINITELY be on a quiz or test. Nothing else should go on this side • ALL pages should be odd numbers for the RIGHT side • use only pen or pencil and red pencil or highlighter for key words or to emphasize important ideas and relationships 6 7 RIGHT SIDE

  15. Interactive science notebooks Remember…Left Side… • the LEFT side of the notebook is contains the BOCA and your interpretation of the concepts learned • ALL pages should be even numbers for the LEFT side • lots of COLOR – the brain remembers things in color better 6 7 LEFT SIDE

Interactive science notebooks This ISN will help you… • Gather Information • remember (define, match, recall, repeat, record, label) • show understanding (paraphrase, discuss, give examples) • Process the Information • use understanding (operate, practice, use, solve, illustrate) • examine (diagram, question, analyze, outline, debate) • create (modify, design, assemble, generate, construct) • Apply the Information • decide (judge, select, measure, evaluate, justify, conclude) • support evidence (prove and support your answer)

Interactive science notebooks What to do… • complete all your work in the composition notebook • you have to bring it to class everyday • if you don’t have your notebook you will have to follow discipline steps • add handouts using tape or staples to hold them in place • these would be placed on the right side of your notebook • take care of your notebook • be prepared for unscheduled notebook checks • remember to be creative and colorful when completing the left side of your notebook

Interactive science notebooks Evaluation/Grading… • your ISN will be checked periodically • at times I will spot check your notebooks and give you instant feedback • other times, I will grade your notebooks on thoroughness, quality, and accuracy of work, organization, and visual appeal • you will also be evaluating your notebooks • every assignment should be complete and neat • your artistic or creative touch should be visible throughout the notebook • use color, pictures, and diagrams in order to reinforce class materials

Interactive science notebooks Evaluation/Grading… • it is also important to realize that it is your responsibility to obtain class notes, materials and notebook assignments in case you that are absent from class • failure to do so will result in an incomplete notebook and less knowledge and creativity Remember that this is a great chance to use your creativity, and change a boring binder into a dynamic work of educational art! The purpose of the interactive science notebook is to enable you to be resourceful, independent thinkers and writers. You will be able to express your own ideas and process the information presented in class.
