  9. TPO • WE WILL ANALYZE THE LITERATURE ELEMENTS AND TOOLS OF DICTION,MOOD,TONE, AND AUTHORS PURPOSE TO BETTER INTERPRET LITERATURE.

THE WAY WE FEEL • Denotation is the dictionary definition. • Connotation refers to feelings and attitudesassociated with the words. • Diction is the author’s deliberate wordchoice. • Author’s Purpose : to explain, inform, persuade, entertain. It is also his/her intent for writing the piece of literature. • Mood: The feeling the reader gets from the piece of literature.

Diction= TONE • Tone= the author’s attitude towards his subject or his audience • Think about the following word: walking • “stroll” – to describe walking for pleasure without hurrying • “wander” – to describe walking without specific purpose • “trudge” – to describe walking slowly with effort, usually in a tiring and long journey • “stride” – to describe walking fast, taking big steps • “shuffle” – to describe walking slowly, without taking your feet off the ground • Which word would you use if you were walking… • … lost at the mall • … late for class • … at the park enjoying a sunny day • When might you use the word “trudge” or “shuffle”?

  16. WHAT DAD’S DO LESSON • Read both poems with the same subject and answer the diction/mood/tone questions.

  17. CAT / DOG • Read the two separate stories and determine what the subject of both are( should be the same) • Highlight the diction that creates feeling in the stories. • What is the author’s tone for each of the two stories? • What is the overall mood of each story?

VERY SHORT STORIES • INDENTIFYING TONE/MOOD • Answer the question over each of the very short stories? • Once you have answered each of the questions over the stories, on a sheet of paper, turn the answers into a short answer OER complete with a topic “is” “because” statement , embedded proof an explanation.

  20. Author’s Purpose • ENGLISH I: Read the biographical information of William Golding “Lord of the Flies” to determine the intent of the author. • ENGLISH IV: Read the biographical information on Aldous Huxley , “Brave New World” to determine the intent of the author.
