  3. Overall Interpretation • He has an interest in paintings -at one time hipped on painting, (1-2) • He talks about movement -a more pregnant motion (line 14) -from necessity merely to move (line 8) Williams point of View of paintings changed -did not consider the effects (lines 2-3) -for me, a more pregnant motion: (lines 13-14)

  4. Sense: Meaning & Language • Speaker: The author • POV: 1st person • Internal thoughts of the author • Mood/ Tone: Reflective • Theme: Appreciation for Art • Allusion: The Thinker(1902)

  5. Sense: Imagery • The Flowers and The Gloves (6) • Cat briar (15-20) -these would otherwise be still pictures but can appear to be “moving” with imagination

  6. Diction • Still vs. Moving -In the beginning: “still” “static” “stillness” “merely” - The end: “clinging” “motion” “arching” “move” • Words ending in ‘ing’ - “thinking” “clinging” “arching” “delivering” -show action

  7. Structure • 5 stanzas • 4 lines in each stanza • Lost of commas in the beginning -Shows uncertainty & hesitance • Enjambment -Between each stanza -Between some of the lines • Juxtaposition -3rd stanza the male and female are being contrasted

  8. Sound Alliteration -Female frantic (12) Repetition -Repeats painting2x Rhythm -Freed them preciselyby that From a necessity merely to move (lines 7-8)

  9. Connection to Other Poems • Talks about nature-“Spring & All” • Uses imagery-”The Eyeglasses” • Has enjambment

  10. Activity • Draw something that depicts movement, share it with someone and have them interpret it and see if they can see the movement within it • Think of something that is still but creates or shows movement
