Important Information • The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 allows taxpayers to claim educational credits for some higher education expenses • Each year, FIU prepares an IRS 1098-T Tuition Statement Form for each student who meets all of the following criteria: • FIU received payments of qualified tuition and related expenses from the student • Student is not a non-resident alien • Student is enrolled in classes for academic credit • Student’s tuition and expenses not entirely waived or paid with scholarship • Student’s tuition and expenses not covered by a third party payment arrangement • Beginning for Tax Year 2005, FIU provides these forms to students electronically on the PantherSoft Learner Services site • FIU no longer mails Form 1098-T to students on an annual basis FIU does not provide tax advice. If you have a question about claiming the educational credits, please consult a tax expert

Do I have to get Adobe Acrobat Reader? • No – the dollar amounts displayed in the Box are the same amounts as on the printed copy of the IRS Form • You only need Adobe Acrobat Reader if you want to print a replica of the form in the official IRS format

Why is there a negative number in the Details for charges in this example? The Details show all eligible transactions resulting from enrollment activity Line 1 582.72 = student enrolled for 6 undergrad resident tuition credit hours 4/24/05 Line 2 -291.36 = student dropped 3 credit hours on 4/25/05 Net result 291.36 is included in Box 2 for Summer ’05 tuition
