  1. Microsoft Security Essentials Protecting your computer is a process, not a program.

  2. Microsoft Security Essentials • Microsoft Security Essentials grew out of Windows Defender and Windows LiveCare; its primary advantage is its cloud-based security data sourcing. • OSU adopted MSE as its main AV/AM software in summer 2010, replacing McAfee AV. • Extension kept its McAfee license until February 2011.

  3. McAfee License Ended • What does this mean? • ALL computers with McAfee on them need to be switched to MSE. • All computers with McAfee should be assumed to be at risk, since their definitions have (probably) failed since February.

  4. Removing McAfee – Method 1 • FIRST download MSE from http://www.microsoft.com/security-essentials. Removing McAfee will leave your computer unprotected, and you want that period of time to be as short as possible.

  5. Removing McAfee – Method 1 • Go to Start>Control Panels>Add/Remove programs.

  6. Removing McAfee – Method 1 • Scroll down to the entry for McAfee and click on it. Click the “remove” button. • Wait for the process to complete. This can take a little while. • When it finishes, run the MSE installer you downloaded. • Accept the license agreement and run the validate option to validate your copy of Windows. MSE will not install unless you do this.

  7. Removing McAfee – Method 1 • After validating, click the “Install” button. • When installation completes, click “Finish.” MSE will update itself and run a quick scan. If the scan finds anything, contact your support technician as soon as possible.

  8. Removing McAfee – Method 2(Preferred) • Go to http://support.dasnr.okstate.edu • Click on “Links and Downloads” • Scroll to the bottom and download the McAfee Removal and MSE Install File (McAfeeSwitcher.exe) • Run the file and then reboot. • The file removes all versions of McAfee, and installs or updates Chrome, Flash, Java, Adobe Reader, and MSE.

  9. Using MSE • MSE shows as a small green or orange castle on your task bar. • Green means everything’s fine, orange indicates an issue, usually not an emergency. • Right-click the castle and choose “open” to view the menu.
