  1. Shamrock Chapter National Junior Honor Society April 20, 2011 Meeting

  2. Meeting Agenda • Leadership Activity • Binders • Being a Shamrock Chapter Member • Election of Officers • Summer Service Project • YAR Group Service Project • Summary

  3. Leadership Activity: • Quiet Shape • This activity helps the leaders of a group interact equally with every member of the team while assessing their own strengths and weaknesses as leaders. • Divide the group into sets of five people each. • Choose a leader of each group and whisper a shape in his ear. • The leader must get his group to form that shape without speaking or pulling people into position. The leader may only gesture or touch. If there is time, rotate until everyone has had a chance to be a leader.

  4. NJHS Binder • Bring to all meetings • Keep important materials • Sections: • Notes • Meeting Handouts • Service Projects • By-laws

  5. Being a Shamrock Chapter Member • Be informed. Consult the SMPS-NJHS Wiki Site regularly for information. Check your email for other announcements. • Participate in individual and our group service projects. • Participate in all meetings. This year they are on Wednesday.

  6. Scholarship • “Candidates …shall have a minimum cumulative 3.7 GPA. This scholastic level of achievement shall be the required minimum…” • Your GPA will be checked at the beginning of each SEMESTER. If you have fallen below, you will receive a warning of letter. Failure to come back up to 3.7 may result in further action, such as dismissal.

  7. Service • “Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in an individual service project that reflects his or her particular talents and interests and as approved by the chapter adviser. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members contribute.” • You will need to develop a service project on which you work a minimum of five hours over the summer and each semester. We will talk more about developing projects in social studies class. Proposal due to Mrs. A. by May 10th • You will turn your service hours verification form to the secretary at the beginning of our monthly meetings. Service forms are due by the end of each semester (Christmas Break and Summer Break) • At the end of the year, you will be required to submit a paragraph describing your service to the wiki site.

  8. Character • Character is the product of constant conscious action, striving daily to make the right choice. The student must be in reality what he or she wishes to portray to others. By demonstrating such qualities as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship, students should be an example of one who values character. • Infractions of school rules which result in referrals or detentions may result in disciplinary action in NJHS.

  9. Leadership • “Students’ leadership should exert a positive influence on the school. In taking the initiative in school and outside of school, the leader strives to train and aid others to attain the same objective.” • You are expected to display leadership in and out of the classroom. It is a constant challenge.

  10. Citizenship • Citizenship is the obligations each member of our society faces to live up to the ideals given to us by the founders of our country. As good citizens, we are bound to live up to the laws and guidelines which unite us as a society. Good citizenship requires that we remain strong and vigilant in protecting the freedoms and rights that have been granted to us and in preventing injustice from entering our lives. • Infractions of school rules which result in referrals or detentions may result in disciplinary action in NJHS.

Election of Officers • Election will be held at our May meeting • Officers are • President • Vice President • Secretary • Treasurer • Those who wish to be on the May ballot must submit a 200 word essay to me by May 10th describing why you would like the council to consider you for this office.
