  3. Facts From Nixon’s Childhood…. • Edgar Daniel Nixon was born on July 12, 1899, in Montgomery, Alabama. • He was born to Reverend Wesley Nixon and Sue Ann Chappell-Nixon. He was the 5th of 8 children. • Nixon’s family were sharecroppers and his father was also a traveling preacher. It was very hard for the family to produce enough crops to pay their debts and have anything left over. E.D. Nixon and his family lived in terrible poverty. When he was only eight years old his momma died and he and his brothers and sisters were sent to live with family members.

  4. Determined to rise above his childhood… • Born into poverty, E.D. Nixon grew up determined to change the conditions around him. When his mother died, he was sent away to live with his Aunt Pinky. She was a very fair woman with high expectations for young Edgar but she remarried a man who had no use for him. He treated Edgar very cruelly and because of the amount of work he was made to do, there was little time for formal education at the end of the day. At the age of only 14, Edgar made the decision to run away and make a life of his own. After teaching himself how to read, Nixon was convinced that education - fair and equal education - was the key to uplift struggling blacks.

  5. An image from Nixon’s early life…. • This a picture of the home E.D. Nixon lived in on Clayton Street when he lived in Montgomery. This house is still standing and is not too far from our school, E.D. Nixon Elementary School.

  6. Nixon’s Mid-Adult Life • During Nixon’s mid-adult life, he worked at the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (B.S.C.P). • He traveled to St. Louis, Missouri with the porters in 1928. He had no idea to leave Montgomery other than with the porters, until he met A. Philip Randolph. E.D. Nixon Jr. said his father “left St. Louis a different man, for now he had a mission, a purpose in life. It was to work with Mr. Randolph all around the United States, helping him organize Pullman Porters into the strongest black union in America,… and he did,…and they won.”

  7. A Few of Nixon’s Significant Accomplishments • National Association Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.)-the 1st President • Civil Rights Leader • Planned Montgomery Bus Boycott • Worked very zealously to organize black laborers. • Started the Overall Committee, to assist all classes of blacks • Struggled to establish the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (B.S.C.P)
