  2. Recap • Until now, the colony has been under the control of the chartered companies who had the fur trade monopoly. • They did not fulfill their duty of settling the colony (population = 3000 in 1663). They were busy pursuing profit. • Low immigration • Low natural growth (mostly men)

  3. Louis XIV • “The Sun King” r. 1643-1715 • Louis became king when he was 4 years old, and he reigned 72years, the longest reign of a French Monarch

  5. Royal Government1663 • New France had not been a very profitable colony. Louis XIV wanted to change that. • Introduces the same model of government that is in effect in provinces of France: Royal Government.

  7. Governor General • Representative of the King in the colony • Responsible for external affairs • Organized Defence • Military Offensives

  8. Intendant • Responsible for internal affairs: • Police • Military supplies • Justice • Finance • Administration • Economic development • Settlement

  9. Militia Captains • Responsible for setting up a militia in a seigneury • Relay military orders from leaders to people

  10. People • Responsibilities: • Populate New France • Produce money for the colony
