  1. Writing an Awesome ParagraphHow to use CD + CM The field was covered with thousands of sunflowers. I wish I could live near this field, a yellow blanket of gold, rather than in the grimy stench of New York City.

  2. A Sample Paragraph Read the following example of a paragraph: My bedroom is the place where I like to relax and let go of the day’s worries. For example, I can unwind by grabbing one of my favorite novels—like The Hunger Games or Speak. I can immerse myself in a completely different world and not be bothered by reality. The privacy of my room helps me to relax and allows me to take my mind away from daily problems.I always feel a great sense of relief when I get home after a long day of work and am welcomed by my bedroom.

  3. Breakdown of Sample Paragraph Topic sentence = BLUEConcrete detail = REDCommentary = GREENConcluding sentence = YELLOW My bedroom is the place where I like to relax and let go of the day’s worries. For example, I can unwind by grabbing one of my favorite novels—like The Hunger Games or Speak. I can immerse myself in a completely different world and not be bothered by reality. The privacy of my room helps me to relax and allows me to take my mind away from daily problems. I always feel a great sense of relief when I get home after a long day of work and am welcomed by my bedroom.

  4. Topic Sentence (TS) A topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph and is the main idea of the paragraph. My bedroom is the place where I like to relax and let go of the day’s worries.

  5. Concrete Detail (CD) Concrete detail means evidence, support, facts, quotes, proof, and/or examples. For example, I can unwind by grabbing one of my favorite novels—like The Hunger Games or Speak.

  6. Commentary (CM) Commentary means analysis and interpretation—your thoughts, feelings, opinion, insight, personal response—it comes from your heart and from your head. I can immerse myself in a completely different world and not be bothered by reality. The privacy of my room helps me to relax and allows me to take my mind away from daily problems.

  7. What does a concrete detail look like? A literary example: Katniss chose to volunteer as tribute for District 12 when her sister Prim’s name was drawn in the Reaping. What does commentary look like? Katniss’ love for her sister was stronger than her fear for her personal safety. She was willing to risk her own life to protect the life of her sister. She was dedicated to her family and would do anything to ensure their survival, even if it meant sacrificing her own.

  8. What does a concrete detail look like? A personal example: My big sister, who arranged to meet me before the bell rang for the first class, was delayed in traffic and I had to find my way to my new homeroom by myself. What does commentary look like? I had to learn to rely on myself right away. On the other hand, I had to ask others for help, and found out that Coconino had lots of friendly people willing to steer me in the right direction.

  9. Concluding Sentence (CS) A concluding sentence reflects your opinion (it is all commentary) and does not repeat key phrases or ideas. Your concluding sentence gives a finished feeling to your paragraph. I always feel a great sense of relief when I get home after a long day of work and am welcomed by my bedroom.
