  1. Today’s Agenda… • Bellringer: Which energy source do you think is the best alternative to fossil fuels in our area? Explain why. • Take up homework on Energy Sources • Energy Transfer Notes • Open Response Question

  2. Energy from the Sun • The sun provides most of Earth’s energy • This energy causes winds and ocean currents and allows plants to grow and produce food providing nutrition for animals

  3. Energy from the Sun • When Earth receives the sun’s energy 3 things can happen: • It’s reflected back into space by clouds, particles, and Earth’s surface • It’s absorbed by the atmosphere • It’s absorbed by land or water

  4. Heat • Energy that flows from an object with a higher temperature to an object with a lower temperature • Heat from the sun heats the Earth’s surface

  5. Heat Transfer • Heat is transferred through the atmosphere to Earth in 3 ways: • Radiation • Conduction • Convection

  6. Radiation • Energy that is transferred in rays or waves • Example: The sun warms your face

  7. Conduction • Energy that is transferred by direct contact • Example: Touching a hot stove

  8. Convection • The transfer of heat in a fluid or gas that • Happens when the substance warms, expands, and rises • Example: Warming Soup

  9. Think-Pair-Share Think of an example of each type of heat transfer Discuss your example with your neighbor Share your examples with the class

  10. Homework! • Open Response Question • Make sure to do some type of prewriting • Fully explain your answer • Use the rubric
