  2. The Industrial Revolutioncompletely changed the way people lived. • Families before the Industrial Revolution: • Lived further apart • Were self sufficient

  3. City Life • . . .people moved to cities to be near factories. • Because of the Industrial Revolution. . .

  4. Immigrants • Immigrantsfrom other countries increased in number. Why? • They did not have to have $ to pay for land • The jobs required little training.

  5. These growing cities had new dangers: • SEWAGE • FIRE!

  6. Poor Roads Disease spread quickly

  7. Factory Life Factory shifts were usually 12 hour shifts

  8. A Bargain for Factories • Womenand children earned ½ the wage (pay) that the men did for the same job.

  9. Small children were useful because they could climb on the machinery. Their little hands could reach parts that an adult’s could not.

  10. There was no workmen’s compensation or health insurance, so if you were hurt on the job, you would probably be fired.

  11. All members of the family worked in factories.

  12. Unfair Many workers believed that the factory working conditions were unfair.

  13. Let’s work together! We can accomplish more.

  15. Trade Unions (Unions) groups formed by workers to protect their rights and change their work environments

  17. Strike a Bargain! A strike is when workers refuse to work until their demands are met. .
