Step 1: Where Will I Succeed? • Size • Big schools – more options, less help • Small schools – less options, more attention • Location • Would you benefit from leaving New Haven? • Look at schools far away • Environment • Country – more isolated, get to bond w/ your classmates • City – lots of cultural opportunities, jobs, BUT distractions

  4. Step 2: What Do I Care About? • Majors/academic programs • Extracurricular activities • Need to work? • Financial Aid • Diversity • School type • Liberal Arts • Pre-professional • Tech school • Timeline: now

  5. Step 3: Brainstorm and Sort • http://www.naviance.com/articles/college-research-students • Make list of over 20 colleges • Sort into “Reach” “Likely” and “Safety” schools • Grades • SAT scores (on naviance search tool) • Academic reputation • Timeline: soon

  6. Step 4: Narrow It Down • Pick 2-4 schools in each category considering: • Cost (NOT sticker price!) • Intended Major • Opportunities at the school • Gut factor (YES!) • Size • Deadlines • Timeline on this: won’t finish for a while

  7. Today • Handout – with your mentor, think about what kind of school is a good fit for you • Begin identifying schools (web search or other) • If internet’s a problem, can go to Yale’s campus
